Bzzzzz, bzzzz, bzzzzz. A loud buzzing noise wakes me up; I reach under my pillow and grab my phone. Not wanting to be blinded by the screen I don’t look at it; figuring it’s Natasha anyways.
“Natasha, how was the kiss with Kip?” I ask after I press the phone to my ear. My eyes are still closed. Pickles is still snuggled against me and… snoring.
“Summer?” A husky male voice asks.
My eyes snap open. “This isn’t Natasha is it?” I say. I slap my hand to my forehead. Well, that’s embarrassing.
“No, it’s Johnny. But who are Natasha and Kip?” He asks curious.
I’m covering my face with my free hand. “My friend back home. I called her earlier and she was about to kiss a guy named Kip. I thought she was calling to give me the details.”
“Oh, did you tell her about our kiss?” I can hear the amusement in his voice.
I blush. “No, that was the first time I’ve talked to her since it happened.”
“Ohhhh, I see. So you do plan on telling her then?”
“I- I um… I mean…” I stutter.
He laughs. “Don’t worry. It was your first kiss. What kind of friend would you be if you didn’t tell her about it?”
I open my mouth to say something and then I decide not too, instead I change the subject. “So, why are you calling? And why so late?”
“It’s only 8.”
I groan. “Alright, I went to bed early tonight.”
“Oh did I wake you up?” He asks concerned.
“It’s okay. So your reason for calling?” I get comfy in my bed again. It was so warm and cozy. And it was even cozier now that Johnny's voice was in the mix. He was just amazing in every way.
“I need help with a question on the homework,” He says slowly.
I can just picture him rubbing the back of his neck. He is so cute. “What question?” I close my eyes.
“Who is Maya’s hero? I have no idea.”
“Well you could say her grandmother, or Mrs. Flowers.”
“Mhmm,” He hums. “Well… why them?”
I laugh. “Alright. Well, the grandmother because Maya thinks of her as a superhero and Mrs. Flowers because she was the one to get her talking after she was raped.”
“Wait, when was she raped?” Johnny asks shocked.
“Did you read the book?” I ask him.
“Here and there. Not really.”
I laugh and then take the next thirty minutes to answer all his questions and explain the book. When I’m done I’m tired and starting to mumble.
Johnny seems reluctant to hang up though and says, “So, what did you do after school today?”
I groan into Pickles fur. “I don’t want to talk about it,” I tell him.
“Why? Is everything okay?” He asks concerned.
“Yeah, just stupid Sam,” I say. Then I immediately regret it. I don’t really want to tell Johnny about us kissing. Katie said that if I wanted a chance with him then not to let that happen. I didn’t really have a choice in the matter… then again I shouldn’t have let him corner me when we almost kissed. I should have been thinking about what she said, not about how cute Sam was. Stupid Sam and his stupid attractive face. Why do boys even have faces?
