 Chapter 1: Davey

I had never been so terrified in my life. A strange woman had broken into the house and was chasing me. She managed to completely shatter one of the windows while getting in. The cold winter air stung my eyes as I ran. I had no idea why she would be after me, of all people. I was still a kid, and never did anything worthy of being attacked for. Right? I heard a loud bang like thunder, and I skidded to a stop. I whipped around. The intruder was gone. How did she disappear like that? How did she possess that kind of power? Did she leave? As these thoughts raced through my head, I felt my right eye begin to twitch. I took a moment to calm down. I breathed in the frigid air, and counted to ten. Then, bracing myself, I turned back around. My chest tightened. I wanted to scream, but nothing came out. There she was. I was face to face with who I could only guess was the intruder.

She was my height. Her face was horrid, twisted into a grimace. I could clearly see long, sharp fangs peeking from beneath her lips. Her icy blue eyes were fixated on me. What kind of creature was she? I screamed and ran for my life. Today couldn't possibly get any more strange, I thought. I tried to breathe, but my lungs felt as though they might collapse. I skidded around the corner and into the kitchen. I heard a loud bark of laughter echoed behind me. That was when the intruder caught me by the back of my shirt.

In that moment, time seemed to slow down. I slipped and as I flailed, accidentally slapped her nose, hard. She let out an unearthly screech and released me. As I fell, I noticed where the kitchen counter was. There was no time to react. My head met the granite countertop with a sickly crack. My mind raced, and the adrenaline faded. Exhausted, I tried to twist around in a final attempt to run, but I failed. Fatigue overtook me, and I fell to the floor. My vision was swimming. My breath grew shorter as I felt a warm liquid dripping into my eyes. I held my fingers to my throbbing head. I pulled them back. Red. I felt faint. The woman who had broken in made a gesture with her hands, and a soft glowing light surrounded me. It was cold as ice, and as hot as an open fire at the same time. Within moments, it began to fade away, leaving me feeling drowsy and helpless. Reality began to slip away. A slam of a door somewhere. Someone was shouting. I was only awake long enough to hear a door slam and another scream.

That was where my life began to go wrong.
