"And w-what..." I began to say, looking at my black cat straight in his blue diamond eyes, "D-do we have to TALK about?!"
Coraline was only looking down at me with a puzzled look on her face.
The black cat only chuckled again to himself, and Coraline slowly got back on her feet, offering me a hand up.
I looked at it, still so afraid and perplexed at the situation, but took her offer and she quickly pulled me up straight to my legs.
It took only a whiff of a second for her and me to realize we were still holding hands. She immediately blushed, yanking herself free from me and I turned my gaze back to my cat, seeing him grinning almost.
"How can you TALK?!" I then screamed, not holding back my shock any longer, "Like, seriously? HOW?!"
"I'm not from here, my dear Wybie." He replied, stretching his slinky body in a large yawn, "I thought you knew that?"
"Knew that?" I replied, anger at the surprise bubbling over me, "KNEW THAT?!"
"Calm down now, Wybie." The cat went on and I was huffing and puffing in fury.
"You could speak THIS entire time and you only choose NOW 'to' me?"
He wrinkled up his nose a little, a smile still pasted on his lips and he just nodded his head in simple defiance.
"Yes."
I couldn't help it then. I just began to laugh at all the absurdity of it all.
"If it helps, Wybie," Coraline went on and placed her thin pale hand on my hunched shoulders, "I DID tell you, like a hundred times that your cat could talk."
"Yeah, no wonder..." I uttered, still in half disbelief of it all. I then turned to my pet and asked him point-blank, "So WHY are you talking to me now...?"
He looked at me silently with his blue diamond eyes, before strolling right past us and heading down the hill to the covered-up well.
I gulped, hesitantly, lifting back up my bike and beginning to follow him down. I stopped, however, before Coraline, and I said nervously.
"Want a lift..?"
She blinked her eyes surprised, pointing to herself quickly, before smiling widely and getting on the spare spot at the back of my seat.
I felt my heart trembling as it bet so fast, and she wrapped her arms around my waist for steadiness. I thought just then that my heart would simply explode.
I swallowed afraid but began to peddle with power down the hill and to the flat open space just a little below us.
When we reached the solid ground, Coraline quickly let go of hold on me and I too got off my bike in worried haste.
My cat was sitting on a big rock, just watching the whole scene playing out before him, and Coraline and I stood around the well, the wooden covering still in place like the day we left it... the well, so dark you could see a sky full of stars from inside it.
"So... what's the matter...?" I whispered afraid, and the black cat jumped down from his perch, walking over to the well and pointing at something I had completely overseen.
There it was, as bright as day.
A gap.
A GAP opened at the side of the wooden cover, and I then just felt my blood curdle in terror.
Absolute TERROR.
"She's gone..."
I was just staring still at the gap when Coraline said this and the cat nodded his head.
