Another day, another clue.
The office was dead quiet at 3 a.m., the silence punctuated only by the soft hum of the air conditioner. It was empty, but I preferred to stay here longer; my thoughts seemed clearer in the solitude. Jung Kook mentioned that Mr. Lee had a land dispute, but strangely, this was never mentioned in the media or any articles. How did he know? Mr. Lee seemed to have more layers than an onion. I was sifting through the clues, articles, and notes, trying to make sense of this whole cycle of deaths.
HOW? WHY? WHAT?
These questions were gnawing at me. This case might not be as complex as it appears, but with so few clues, it's far from child's play.
I need to clear up my head.
I walked out of the cabin and went down the basement to the gym. The punching bag hung still, a silent witness to my frustration. I donned my gloves, the tightness a small comfort, and as I approached the bag, my mind was ablaze with anger. With each punch, I hoped to lose some clarity.
Snap!
Stopping abruptly, I analyse a thought that came to me just now. They were all businessmen, of fairly big companies, with high value and great fame to their names.
Could this be family revenge?
It's hard to process thoughts when you have a vague idea about the person, especially when the time period given isn't long enough to solve a case like this. My next task would be to interrogate each of their close relatives and those who live miles away as well.
It was about time this starts making sense
This case would have been closed had I not been attacked that day. Alas, sometimes vague mistakes lead to dark histories being uncovered that you'd want to keep hidden.
But who was that?...
I start moving towards the elevator to get back to my cabin. As I reached for the buttons, I sensed a swift shadow move towards the stairs through my peripheral vision.
SHIT! FUCK! NONONO, NOT now!
NOT WHEN I DON'T HAVE MY GUN!
GODDAMNIT
I'm unarmed right now and this is probably the best time to kill me. As I waited for the elevator to come down, my heart was a runaway drum, pounding fiercely against my ribs. I felt my pulse rise and a gush of adrenaline, as if I were ready to fight till death but also well aware of the fact that I might not make it alive. The sweat trickling down my neck felt icy against the heat of my panic as my breath rapidly increased. Knowing that I can encounter another life-taking attack right now, especially without my gun at hand, isn't a pleasant feeling. It felt like an eternity before the doors opened up , and i hastily moved in and closed them abruptly before pressing for the 21st floor, slowly letting out a relieved sigh
Why didn't I die?
Evidently, I sprinted back to my cabin at full speed, just to hold my revolver so that, in case I was attacked, at least I died with my gun. Nothing happened. The silence was oppressive. My mind began to play tricks—footsteps echoing where there were none.
As the sweat dripped from my brow and the adrenaline slowly faded, I realized that I needed to channel this energy into my work. The gym session had cleared my mind, if only slightly. It was time to dive back into the investigationWhy didn't I die, though?
~ NEXT MORNING~
The encounter of the day before had left me in a mental dilemma. I thought it would be better to give myself a day off before I proceeded with my interrogations with Mr. Lee's family and relatives. I also have to make a set of questions that I ask them in order to figure out a loophole. Everyone has it; you just have to look out for it.
~INTERROGATION ROOM~
"So, Mrs.Lee, How are you today?" I asked, trying to ease the tension.
"I am fine, dear, just going through the days," she replied, her voice quivering with quiet sobs. Welp this is going to be hard.
"Mrs. Lee, I need to ask you some questions for the record," I said, maintaining a professional tone.
She nodded, tears still in her eyes.
"Mrs. Lee, have you noticed anything unusual from the family recently?" I asked, trying to keep my voice gentle. She hesitated, her eyes darting around the room. "Not much... but my brother-in-law did come by a few days ago. They... they argued loudly, and he left in a rage."
"Can you tell me more about the argument?" I pressed gently, sensing her reluctance.
"Mrs. Lee, I need you to cooperate with me and let me on to the full story or else I'm unable to help you anytime soon." She thought for a while before continuing" My brother-in-law visited us a few days prior for some business-related discussions that he wanted to have with my husband, but for some reason, after about half an hour of them sitting in the study room, they both started arguing and eventually started screaming until Hyung-Suk left in anger,", she stated
"Thank you, Mrs. Lee." We shared a nod as she left the room.
Hyung-Suk, eh, that's a new character. Mr. Lee had a brother; how come we never knew about his existence? The family never seemed to talk about him.
~ 3 HOURS LATER ~
There is nothing much that I could uncover from these fools. None of them and I mean none of them, have the normal decency to at least not make a scene in front of the police. It was almost as if they were overjoyed.
Happy? But why?
They looked like they had majorly profited from the death, more so because this family deeply despised Mr. Lee so much that they would do anything to make sure he was dead.
The only question all of them tried dodging was when I asked them what would be a major change in the family dynamic since Mr. Lee was no longer there to uphold the Lee's.
They were all lying right in front of the police, and that wasn't even the irritable part of this whole interrogation. The worst part was that they weren't even pretending to be sad or devastated, even in front of Mrs. Lee and their kids; this just showed how uncivilised these people were.~ AT THE CONDO ~
I'm currently in the process of making a mind map of the entire questionnaire that happened today. There is something that I am not catching up to , something that is going to join all of this together once and for all
BUT WHAT IS IT?
Mrs. Lee said that Mr. Lee had a brother, but why wasn't he talked about anywhere?
What was his name?...Agh!
I thought for a while until it hit meYEA Hyung-Suk.
I searched him on the net; just a small clue is enough. All I found about this person was that he was a businessman similar to Mr. Lee, probably a sister company for Mr. Lee and that he managed all the exports of Mr. Lee's from around the world and in the country as well.Exports huh?
A little more dwelling about him and I made just the right discovery about the family status
He's an illegitimate child, after all...
