"So, I'm assuming you haven't gone on a date since Miss Stacy right?" Kitty asks, the curly maned mutant digging her fork into the chicken casserole and taking a bite.
"Yeah, just been worried and unsure how to let someone enter into my life that way for years now." Peter states, the somber pain visible on his face recalling that dreadful night.
"Can I give you some advice?"
"Sure." He clears his throat, regaining his composure.
"Take things slow Peter and embrace the fact you swore you would do better for Gwen and everyone else you've lost." She places her gentle hand atop of his. "You deserve happiness just like the rest of us Pete."
Peter ponders this, it's been years since Gwen has passed yet he still carries the burden of losing another love the same way. The gripping fear he dreads each passing day to allow himself to get close enough to a woman felt like the strict Jedi code he mustn't break.
He stands in front of Gwen's tombstone, all by himself surrounded by yards of other graves as the cold air passes by.
"I'm conflicted Gwen, how can I make anyone happy if all I'll bring is misery into their lives later on?" He asks, getting no response from the grave.
"You work things out together." He turns around to see the blind lawyer Matt Murdock behind him holding his cane and a small bouquet of white flowers.
"What are you doing here?"
"Visiting a old lover myself, she's not far from here." He tells him, walking over and standing beside him looking down at the gravestone. He pulls out one flower and places it in front of the stone.
"What was she like?"
"Stubborn, surreal, deadly, the complete definition of a ex."
"Yet your love for her never diminishes."
"Never in the slightest Peter but I moved on and found another chance at similar happiness, took what I learned from past experiences and did better. Love isn't a fair game in life Peter, you don't always win but you don't always lose either."
"You think I should try again too?"
"Our lives are complicated than most. We must lie and break trust constantly to protect those we love but if she understands and is willing to try with you through all of it then the challenges come with the rewards."
"There's this woman that helped me, maybe I can start there."
"She works nearby where she helped you, start from there."
Matt walks away leaving Peter to turn around and see Gwen smiling at him from the tree. He gives a smile back to her before departing away.
