Whitney’s POV-

I couldn’t shake the moment we had just had. I kept wishing Toby would but his arm around me while we were on the couch, but of course, that never happened. Toby remained on the opposite side of the couch from me, doing something on his computer.

His eyebrows were furrowed again, this time in concentration, but I could tell he was working on something important. I slid over to him and rested my chin on his shoulder looking at the screen. I knew I shouldn’t be doing this but he looked lonely all the way on the other side of the couch from me.

A word document was open and the cursor flashed over and over again as he thought of what to write next. It looked like some kind of script for a new video.

“Hey, you.” He said, turning his head slightly so he could see my face. I smiled at him and turned back to squinting at the computer screen.

“Hey. You sound tired” I commented, looking back into those beautiful hazel eyes. He hadn’t looked away even after I had.

“So do you! You look even more tired than I do miss ‘I almost died today’” He pointed out. I had been getting tired but hadn’t wanted to say so in case he would take that to mean I wanted to go back to my hotel.

“I’m fine.” He gave me a skeptical look. “I am! Seriously! I’m not tired at all.” A huge lie. To my east coast brain it was already past midnight and, like he had pointed out, I’d had an eventful day. But, like most every other emotion, I didn’t let it show on my face.

Over the next hour and a half we didn’t do much. I mostly flipped through channels or played video games while Toby continued to sit and stare at his computer screen. Occasionally, a smile would light up his face before typing a slew of sentences, but then he was back to glaring at every word before you knew it.

By midnight I was curled on the couch, watching the Chronicles of Narnia, trying to keep my eyes open. I was vaguely aware of Toby putting down his laptop and slowly getting up. My eyes drifted closed but I could feel what he was doing.

I felt myself lifted into the air and carried somewhere bridal style. I wrapped my arms around Toby’s neck but he took them off when he laid me down on a bed. I felt him slip off my Heely’s and pull a blanket over me. I snuggled deeper into the warmth of it in the cool air conditioned house.

Listening closely, I heard footsteps leave the room and start to close the door. It never clicked shut though. I opened my eyes enough to see Toby walking back down the hall, the door was slightly open, just enough that I could see him. I closed my eyes again and drifted to sleep.

Toby’s POV-

I made sure to pull the covers up to Whitney’s neck and smiled when she buried herself deeper into them. She needed to sleep after everything she had gone through today.

I left the door open a crack so I could keep an eye on her. As I walked down the hall I pulled out my phone. Pressing speed dial I waited as the phone on the other end rang.

“TOBY! What’s up man? How was your first day of VidCon?” Jack called into the phone.

“It was…eventful. I need you to come over, now.” I said urgently. I need to talk to a friend.

“Yeah, sure dude. Be there in five!” He said before hanging up. I paced the living room before going into the kitchen and grabbing another Mt. Dew. I almost reached for a beer before I thought better of it. I didn’t need alcohol messing up my emotions too.

I jumped when the doorbell rang. Running to the door, I yanked it open. Jack stood there, a large smile and a huge Slurpee in hand.

“Shut up! You need to be quite!” I hissed, Jack seemed taken aback but I didn’t want his stupidity waking up Whitney. She needed her sleep.

“Sheesh, dude! What’s your problem?” My regret of asking him over was beginning. Jack walked through the door, making himself at home once he got to the living room. Plopping down on the couch he continued to eat his Slurpee. I watched his reaction as he noticed the silver backpack on the floor that was clearly a bag that belonged to someone not me. He looked back up at me, shock evident on his face.

“It’s not what you think Jack.” I tried to say. He cut me off before I could continue.

“It’s the first night of VidCon and you already brought some crazy fangirl to ‘stay the night’?!” He hissed, now suddenly whispering with me. I shook my head.

“She isn’t some crazy fangirl I decided to pick up! She had an asthma attack during VidCon at my table. I had to bring her to the hospital and decided she might like to spend the evening here with me but she fell asleep.” I explained. How Jack could think I had started picking up random hothothot chicks, I don’t know.

“But she is still here, sleeping at your house, probably in your bed!” I scowled. She was still here and I had tucked her into my bed not the guest bedroom. I ran my hands through my hair and groaned.

I was completely regretting calling Jack now instead of someone else. Like me, when faced with a crisis or emotional overload, he locks up then blows up and repeats until the problem is resolved. I reached for my phone but Jack smacked away my hand.

“OW! What was that for?” I growled.

“Who were you planning on calling?” He asked.

“Olga. She will keep a level head about this,” I replied. Jack glared at me.

“And I’m not?” he accused. I was tempted to slug him and he looked about the same.

“Not really. You’re really just making my paranoia worse.” I glared back some more. We were eyeing each other up. We both knew that we were going to be pretty evenly matched in a fight.

“What’s going on, Toby?” I heard Whitney ask from behind me. All rage diminished as I rushed over to her. She still looked really sleepy but mostly she looked confused as she took in the situation. I wrapped my arm around her waist and hugged her closer to my side, feeling like I needed to protect her from Jack for some reason.

“Nothing. Everything’s fine. Let’s get you back to bed.” Keeping her molded into the side of my body I led her back to my room.
