Engagement

I giggled to myself as Toby led me, blindfolded, towards some sort of surprise. This was our second Christmas together now and I was curious how he was planning on topeing last year’s gift. Last year we had a quiet Christmas together with pj’s, hot cocoa, and too many Christmas movies along with driving around and looking around decorations.

Fumbling through some kind of doorway, I was torn from my thoughts as I attempted to follow the directions Toby was whispering in my ear. I kept getting lost in his voice, leading to me running into various walls.

“Okay. You can stop here.” He said, slipping my blindfold off at the same time. I gasped when I looked around me.

Christmas lights and burning candles were hung up and laid everywhere, illuminating the unfamiliar room so much you didn’t need any other lights on. Tinsel glittered from the ceiling and my attention was brought to every corner of the room before falling on some very comfortable looking furniture. Smiling, I took Toby’s hand and dragged him to the couch where I proceeded to lounge on, grateful to get off my feet after walking for so long.

“Toby…this is amazing.” I whispered in his ear as he sat next to me and I curled into him.

“Why thank you my dear, but I hope it’s gonna get better.” He whispered back before sliding off the couch so he was kneeling in front of me. He reached toward his back pocket.

“Toby…” I trailed off as I realized what he was doing.

“Whitney Anne Vliet. We have been together for a year and a half. The best year and a half of my life. I never want you to go and I love you so much. I want to be there for you every day when you get home and get to look at you from across the breakfast table every morning for the rest of my life. Would you give me the enormous honor of marrying me?” He asked sweetly as he opened the small, velvet ring box.

My heart skipped a beat when I saw the ring. A blood red ruby was perfectly set into a silver band with small saphires crisscrossing with the curve and twist of the metal band. I could feel tears of shock and joy pricking the back of my eyes as I took in everything that had just happened. Not being able to due to the lump in my throat, I nodded my answer as I tried to hold off the tears that threatened to spill over.

Toby smiled at me, understanding my reaction, and slipped the ring on my left hand. Pulling me to a standing position he pulled me close to him as I sobbed into his shoulder.

“Yes Toby. I would…be honored…to be called your wife.” I finally stuttered out. I could feel Toby chuckle slightly against me.

Pulling back a little he tilted his head toward mine and I met his kiss somewhere in the middle. My heart beat fast knowing what just happened. I was getting married.

Wedding

Whitney’s POV-

I crinkled my nose a little at the sting on the back of my neck. Justine had just let of a still hot curl. I sighed slightly. I didn’t like all this fuss over me.

“What are you all huffy about?” Olga asked as she did her own hair and makeup.

“I just don’t like all the fuss. I would much rather go to my wedding in jeans than that mountain of a dress.” I complained, ruffling the dress’s skirt that hung on the closet door next to me. The black lace at the bottom barely peaked out the bottom of the dry cleaning bag.

Justine laughed behind me but didn’t say anything. After another hour of getting ready it was time for the dress. I stood up from sitting on my stool to see it.

“Ready to see it again? It’s been a month since you last saw it.” Justine confirmed as she unzipped the bag holding the large gown.

My breath caught in my throat and I fell in love with it all over again. I remembered now why I chose this dress. The white fabric all wrapped around so it ended in a one shoulder strap on the right side of the dress. Black lace adorned eh bottom and top edges of the dress while a red sash hung from the waist of the bodice. It was perfect.

“It’s just as amazing as before. I can’t believe it.” I was in complete shock as Justine and Olga helped me into the dress. The reality of what was happening was starting to hit; my breathing got heavier and my vision got slightly blurry. Everything sounded so far away.

“Whitney? Are you okay?” I could barely hear Olga’s think Russian accent cut through the silence in my head but my thoughts didn’t stop.

Visions of Toby changing his mind and leaving me at the alter scared me into complete silence. I knew I must be hyperventilating and that Justine and Olga were trying to get my attention but I was stuck in a nightmarish world in my own head. I shied away slightly when I felt something touch my ear.

“Whitney? Baby, are you okay?” I heard Toby’s voice. My thoughts cleared enough to see Olga pressing a cell phone to my ear.

“To…Toby?” I knew it was him but I needed him to talk, not me. I needed his voice in my head, full of concern and love, instead of the terrible images.

“Hey babe. Olga told me you were panicking. What’s wrong?” He whispered into the phone. I could feel myself relaxing the more I listened to him talk.

“I…I’m okay. I just really needed to hear your voice.” I whispered back. Toby chuckled quietly on the other end. I knew Sean and Jack were likely with him and I had Olga and Justine so we were both trying to be semi quiet.

“Well, I’m here now and I can’t wait to see you in an hour. You probably look even more gorgeous than usual.” He cooed in my ear. How much I wished he could be here with me.

“I can’t wait! I need to finish getting ready then.” I said with new enthusiasm. Hanging up the phone before he could say anything else, I turned to Olga and Justine who were looking at me with curiosity.

“Well? What’s the verdict?” Justine asked. I smiled.

“What are we waiting for? We have a wedding to get ready for. My wedding!”

Toby’s POV-

I watched, astonished as Whitney’s father walked her down the aisle. Her hair was loosely curled and fell across her shoulders, showing off the fact the amazing wedding dress she was wearing only had one strap.

I could see her blush slightly under my gaze but that just made her all the more beautiful. After what felt like an eternity she finally was standing next to me. Taking her hand in mine the pastor began while Whitney and I snuck loving glances at each other. I was startled slightly when the pastor said my name. Repeating his words like I practiced and then listened as Whitney did the same, I couldn’t stop smiling to myself.

Everything was a blur as I kissed her and we ran off down the aisle to the room where pictures were being take. Kissing her on the cheek we got ready to run into the reception area. Sitting down next to her I put an arm around her thin waist and pressed my forehead against hers. A smile spread across both our faces.

“So…do you like the fairytale theme? Once upon a time?” She asked as she read the banners around the room.

I smiled at her. “More like once in a lifetime Mrs. Whitney Turner.”
