This project is a fan fiction set in the Star Trek universe. It has been nearly a decade of work, and the story has changed as I have grown from a young teenager to an adult. Because it was planned well before Star Trek returned to the small screen, it ignores the events of the newer series; Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks. It has become a novella based around both original and familiar characters, told in a unique format from the perspective of a deeply knowledgeable historian. Listen to the spotify playlist as you read to set the mood.
Nobody was quite sure when the first step of humanity's demise began, but many historians agreed it happened before the United Federation of Planets charter was even signed. The great human project, the projection of civilisation across the galaxy – destined to fail. In its failure, the galaxy would end in ruin, and nothing would ever be the same again. Humanity, in its arrogance, believed it had surpassed its flaws and become something greater. But humanity was in a bubble of ignorance, hopes and dreams, ready to burst. As the 24th century drew to a close, the bubble split in an epic fury.
As the pieces fell into place on the board, the fate of humanity and of the galaxy rested with two people who took on a great burden and tried to fix the universe. They would fail in the former and succeed in the latter. This is a story of great leaders, good people who made brutal choices, war and courage. The road to not only hell, but the end of everything, is paved with good intentions. This story delves into a time when we learn to look inwards at everything that defines us, and ask – why are we are here, and do we, as a people, deserve to survive? What is sacrifice? When does the cost become too great? Who are we here to save? While we may ask, we may never get the answer.
