Amy found herself in hospital for almost 3 months . Initially,
the doctors thought she might lose her leg, it was so badly damaged. The muscle had been almost completely severed and she'd lost alot of blood. By some miracle, her femoral artery was intact. An operation to repair the damage went remarkably well and, as she said herself, she was a bloody minded Scot. She wouldn't give in.Daily physio and another smaller operation a few weeks later to remove some scar tissue that didn't respond to ultrasound therapy, meant she was on the way to recovery. Tom initially stayed with her every day, work permitting, as she underwent her operations and began the rehab. Wiping her tears however many fell and cheering her successes, however small. The 5th week though, he reluctantly had to go away for 6 weeks on a press tour for his latest film. He'd called and facetimed almost every day when time zones allowed but it just wasn't the same.
Amy was determined to be walking by the time he came home and wanted to surprise him. Therefore everyone was sworn to secrecy. Even Jamie, who realised there no arguing with her, kept the secret. Whenever Tom asked, they just said things were going ok. She might even be allowed out for the day when he got back. Which was actually true.
For his part, he kept the florists and bakers in London in business singlehandedly. Every Friday morning, a fresh bouquet of 2 dozen roses arrived for her and a basket of goodies for the ward staff. As a result, the nurses and doctors worshipped the ground he walked on. Almost as much as she did. After the first month, Jamie had to go home and back to work so she was on her own.
Despite the almost daily contact from Tom and the regular calls from Jamie, she really was on her own. Her parents were both gone and she was an only child. But Amy was tough. She was so determined to get better, it gave her purpose and distraction. Her ultimate goal was what when Tom got home? She wanted to dance. Not the can can for sure, but a slow shuffle in the arms she missed so much woud he heaven.
One rainy afternoon, as she lay looking out the window, having given up trying to read after a particularly hard phsyio session, she had a visitor. An casually elegant woman, in her 60's appeared at the room door with a bunch of roses and a lovely, if faintly familiar, smile. Amy put down her book and smiled back , curious as to who this could be .
" Hello, " the visitor said " you look like you could use some company?"
"Yes, please do come on in" Amy replied, " anyone who wants a chat is welcome here "
The woman came in and placed the flowers down on the table in front of Amy.
"For you dear" she said " although by the looks of it you have plenty to be going on with" she studied the little notes on the flowers from Tom " These are beautiful - you must be cared for very much. So who is Tom? A very lucky Boyfriend?"
Amy blushed and sighed a little, " No. Sadly not, I'm not sure... Although it would be lovely. Hes ...well he's ....a very very close friend. More than a friend but.." she trailed off as she relaised she was telling her innermost secrets to a complete stranger. But a stranger with a warm smile and a charm she'd only known once before. That smile returned when she said
"Oh my dear child, he's definitely more than a good friend but your discretion does you proud. " before a confused Amy could respond the woman sat on the edge of her bed and patted her hand " you see, I know because he told me. I'm Diana and Tom is my son. "Amy gasped, putting a hand to her mouth and Diana enveloped her in a warm hug. They sat for a moment, just sharing their connection, then Diana pulled back a little, looking at her closely.
"I feel I know you already my dear" she said, he's described you in great detail but i now know something he doesn't. She paused, kissing her cheek,
"How much you remind me of him. When I hug you, I feel the same energy as when I hug him. Its uncanny - I love it!"The two women spent the rest of visiting time talking about Tom, their meeting, the accident - Amy wanted to get it out the way - and her plans for surprising Tom. It became apparent he had contacted his mum and asked her to pop in to make sure she wasn't lonely. Diana loved it and said if she could help in anyway at all she would. By the time 5pm and the end of visiting they were firm friends and allies. Tom would be home in two weeks. Enough time to get a plan into action. Amy could hardly wait.
