Amy opened her eyes slowly and realised something was wrong, very very wrong. She wasn't in her bed in the hotel. She wasn't even in the hotel. She was definitely still in the cab, but there was something not right, a deafening silence, a smell of petrol and someone whimpering. Oh and her leg hurt. A lot.
Confused, she turned to where Jamie had been, looking for answers and was met by a scene that instantly made her recoil in fear. No Jamie just a stoved in taxi, a broken and kicked out window and specks of blood on the seat beside her. She could see the other car. An unconscious driver slumped over the wheel. That's where smell of petrol was coming from she thought, oddly calm. She began to realise the whimpering was herself. Looking down she saw her left thigh, pinned and bleeding and viewed it with detached curiosity. It hurt. A lot. But it didn't seem real. She stared, not speaking. In the confusion of her mind she became aware it was her that was whimpering, in shock. It wasn't till Jamie's scratched and bleeding face appeared at her side, looking through what remained of the taxi window on her side, the rest now being wrapped around the pole, that she cried out,
"Oh Jamie your poor face" , she tried to move, then remembered her leg. Looking down again , without thinking, she tried to pull the metal out.
"NO!" yelled her cousin "don't! Leave it, it's stemming the blood. " he looked white and panicked , she sagged back, something in her brain kicked in. Of course basic first aid, don't remove a stabbing implement. Duh!
" Yes, " she said weakly "sorry J" and he smiled. "Its going to be alright" he reached in and patted her arm gently " just don't move. You'll only make it worse. Does anything else hurt?" He asked , his face trying to disguise the rising panic in his chest. She was white, very white. Could be bleeding internally too. He searched around as people started to come to their aid, taking the taxi driver to sit down by the side of the road. They tried to move Jamie too, but he refused, staying holding Amy's hand through the shattered glass. Where was that damn ambulance?"Amy? You ok? Stay with me .." he looked back at her, she was beginning to fade again, her eyes rolling and her face a hellish pallor "Amy! " he shouted at her "Don't you bloody DARE . LOOK AT ME!" She roused herself and smiled wanly,
" Don't shout. You'll wake Tom, he's sleeping ..." she slurred, shock taking over. "Tom..." her face screwed up "where's Tom?" She started to cry "Jamie, I got blood on my Tom...." she pulled at her dress, now completely befuddled " Jamie...." and she slumped forward. It was dark and warm and comfortable, just what she needed after her busy day and late night. Somewhere though, she wasn't sure where, far away, she could hear a voice.
"Amy? Can you hear me ? Amy, open your eyes. Please, its been so long, please... " the voice was cracking, pleading. It was familiar but she couldn't quite place it.
She wanted to, open her eyes that was, but it was so dark, and she was so tired. It had been a long day. The play, the kiss..Tom..in her mind she saw him. Far away, smiling at her. She smiled back, tried to speak but nothing came out. She sighed. A dream. She would sleep some more. Then it would be ok. But the voice wouldn't let her,
"Amy!" More strident this time. She scowled, and felt a hand on her arm and looked down through the blackness and saw...her leg. The blood, the taxi ...it all came rushing towards her at 100 miles an hour. She silently screamed.....and opened her eyes.
She was in a room with bright lights, in a bed that wasn't a hotel. She looked around her, wild eyed and terrified. Then a voice to her right spoke again, a hand stroked her forehead.
"Amy, shhhh its ok, you're safe. Its ok, calm, shhhhh" she turned and saw Jamie. A tear stained, scraped and bruised but smiling, Jamie.
"W-what..." she strained to speak, her mouth seemingly full of feathers.
"Shhh , its ok, there was an accident. You're ok, you're safe and I'm ok too " he smiled knowing the way her mind worked, even in this state.
He came round the bed a little and as he moved, she could see a figure, slumped in a chair behind him, sleeping awkwardly. The figure of a man. With Ginger blonde hair and legs for miles, all scrunched up trying to get comfy. She let out an audible gasp "Tom?"His eyes flickered and opened, he turned towards his name and saw her looking at him, with one leap he was half standing, half kneeling beside her, his eyes full of tears.
"Oh Amy! You naughty, fierce, mad wonderful girl! You came back to us!" He smiled and leant over kissing her forehead softly.
Jamie patted Toms back,
"I'll fetch the doc, you make sure missy here doesn't run away!" He disappeared with a small wave at Amy , she smiled at him then looked back to Tom.He sat down in a chair next to her, holding her hand gently, so as not to disturb the drip placed into the back of it. It felt warm and reassuring and really quite wonderful,
" what happened" she said trying to marshal her thoughts and failing " Accident? Why am ...." she was confused and began to cry a little, Tom gently wiped her cheek, smiling as if his life depended on it."Shhhhh little one, all in good time. All you have to do for now is lie still and breathe. I'll do all the rest, oh Amy. What a fright you gave me - us - Jamie, " he sounded confused and happy and upset all at the same time. She wanted to comfort him but couldn't make herself move. Instead she just said
"Thank you Tom, thank you for coming today, I'm glad you were here when I woke ""Came in today did you say?" Jamie's voice broke in as he returned " He never bloody left. He's been here for 4 days....and he smells like it too !"
Tom and Jamie burst into laughter and as the two of them hugged tightly, bonded first by fear and worry then relief, she looked at them her heart suddenly full. So little time together but so much had happened. Four days eh? God in heaven what had happened? She just couldn't remember. The dull pain in her leg brought her back to earth with a jolt, but before she could worry any further, the doctor appeared.
Jamie and Tom were asked to leave for a few moments so he could examine her. Feeling suddenly scared she looked around with panicked eyes, but Tom came over and kissing her cheek with feather like lips he said,
"We'll be right outside, I promise. See you soon." And they left.
