Big Boss secretly establishes an armed stronghold in South Africa known as Outer Heaven and uses it to launch an uprising. Rookie FOXHOUND soldier Solid Snake destroys the TX-55 Metal Gear and defeats Venom Snake.
Solid Snake retires from FOXHOUND.
The United Nations General Assembly adopts a resolution reaffirming the need for all states parties to the NPT to cease all nuclear testing at once.
1996:
The United Nations General Assembly adopts the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban-Treaty (CTBT).
The world's first cloned sheep, Dolly, is born in the U.K.
1997:
IBM computer Deep Blue defeats Garry Kasparov, world chess champion at the time.
1999:
Big Boss leads an uprising in Zanzibar, abducts Dr. Kio Marv, the creator of OILIX, and uses Metal Gear D to build a nuclear arsenal. Solid Snake is called back into service by Roy Campbell and infiltrates Zanzibar, where he completes his mission by destroying Metal Gear D and defeating Big Boss.
Big Boss is put in a coma. His body is then recovered and hidden by the Patriots.
The Euro, a European single currency, is introduced in 11 member countries of the European Union.
2000:
The Human Genome Project's international team of researchers announces draft sequence of the human genome.
2001:
The September 11 coordinated terrorist attacks occur. The USA PATRIOT Act is enacted with the aim of fighting terrorism within the United States and overseas.
2003:
A coalition of multinational forces invades Iraq on suspicion of the country possessing WMDs. The Iraq War breaks out.
2005:
While on a training exercise in the remote Alaskan island of Shadow Moses, special forces unit FOXHOUND, alog with Next-Generation Special Forces engage in an armed revolt. Former FOXHOUND commander Roy Campbell is in charge of the response, sending in Solid Snake in a one-man infiltration mission. Snake destroys Metal Gear REX and defeats Liquid Snake, leader of the uprising.
Coordinated terrorist bombings occur in London, Egypt, and other locations around the world.
2007:
Anti-Metal Gear organization Philanthropy gets wind of the U.S. Navy's plan to transport a new Metal Gear on a disguised tanker. Solid Snake infiltrates the Tanker, as it is being taken over by the Gurlukovich mercenary group. Ocelot steals Metal Gear RAY and the tanker sinks off the coast of Manhattan.
Marine decontamination facility, the Big Shell is constructed.
Olga Gurlukovich's daughter, Sunny, is born, and stolen away by the Patriots.
Strategic bomber flights resumed in remote areas of Russia for the first time in 15 years.
2009:
The armed group, the Sons of Liberty, seize control of the Big Shell Facility and take the U.S. president hostage. Raiden, a member of the new FOXHOUND, infiltrates the Big Shell alone and eliminates the group and its leader, Solidus Snake.
Solidus' body is recovered by the Patriots.
Ocelot (Liquid) seizes GW from Arsenal Gear.
Otacon and Snake extract data pertaining to the location of the Wisemen's Comitee. An interim investigation on the Patriots begins.
