human

Science says
they are composed of a labyrinth of tissues and nerves
an intelligent brain, a beating heart—
consisting of an exterior of fragile skin
and a foundation of brittle bones;
Skin—they come in different shades
Hair and eyes—a varying range of colours;
their bodies are each abstract and unique
—but they are human all the same

Society explains
that they are interdependent
thriving in a glorious community
—a family, a nation, a country—
striving to evolve themselves as history shows it
in fading records and rusted inventions;
They confide in each other for love
they cooperate with others for power
man in nature is a social animal
slowly destroying the world they live in
through their connections and innate nature
—which is why they are human all the same

History and myths claim
they follow and serve a higher being
God, Allah, Elohim—this entity goes by different names;
But why do they believe?
—perhaps it is because they need a confirmation
that something is looking out for them
—maybe it is because they need to know
that god has laid out a path that is best for them

They also believe in themselves;
Believing their judgement
when they stand at the crossroads of an obstacle
Trusting their own two feet
when walking down the thorny path of life;
Though scarred and bruised and battered
they think their spirit is unyielding
—another reason why they are human all the same

Humans are not omnipotent
they are not god;
However, they are gifted with feelings and emotions
to express themselves:
Laughing when they are joyful—
and despairing when they are in pain
Shouting when they are angry—
and trembling when they are fearful
—they are human all the same

Nonetheless, everything has its flaws
and humans are no exception

Though they are capable of love
they are also prone to hate:
for the pained ones—
the victims of domestic violence
the innocents in racism and gender inequality;
Though they hide under the mask of humility
they are arrogant and greedy:
for the lost ones—
the refugees of war
the homeless and the poor;
Humans are not evil
nor are they good
for depending on how they use their individualistic attributes
they choose who they wish to be
—and that is what makes them human all the same

So tell me now, what does it mean to be human?

Are they their redemption of peace, love and creation?
Or are they their downfall of war, hate and destruction?

That is up to you, dear one
For such conflicting, beautiful beings
cannot be described by words,
and the universe itself would struggle
to comprehend their very existence
