The carriage pulled to a stop and the horses whinny. The door is opened by the coachman for me and I take a deep breath. I smooth out any crinkles in my dress and in my hair before stepping out. The coachman took my hand and my mouth opened a bit in awe.

It was a brick building with dozens of gardens in the front. Hard, cherry wood doors were in front of me with a knocker. The coachman walked my bags to the door as I snapped out of my amazement. But bars lay over the windows and the gates surrounding the asylum were high and pointed.

He knocked at the door. We heard footsteps approach as the door swung open. In front of me a young nurse opened the door.

"Hello! You must be the new nurse in training! I'm Lillian Roland." she said in a bubbly Scottish accent.

She had plain brown hair in a tight bun with loose curls framing her face. She was dressed in a light blue dress and a white apron. She had a nurses cap on and a giant pearl smile.

"Hello my name is Hazel Monte." I spoke politely and held out my hand to shake hers.

The coachman dropped the bags in the hall and waltzed out the door.

She led me in and closed the door behind me.

"Well he was quite rude. I will go get the boss for ya and I'll see you a bit later." She said as she walked up the stairs quickly.

I looked around and there was a crystal chandelier in the hall. The floor was wood and beautiful. Straight ahead a spiral staircase led to upstairs. To the left was a parlor and to the right a dining room. For an asylum this was beautiful.

I was nervous about meeting my boss and fiddled with my fingers. A long time bad habit of mine.

A man descended down the stairs. He had sharp blue eyes and jet black hair. He had a scowl on his face and walked with an air of purpose.

"You must be the new nurse. My name is Edward Valdor. You may call me Mr. Valdor." He said as he shook my hand gently.

He had a dark look to him and was completely mysterious. His jawline was well defined and he was quite handsome.

"M-my name is um Hazel Monte. " I informed him tongue tied.

"Well I expect you will follow along in training and it was a pleasure to meet you. If there is anything you ever shall need I am usually in my office upstairs to the left at the end of the hall."

" Thank you sir. I will try to meet your expectations." I responded sincerely. We held eye contact.

"I will show you around a bit." He hooked my arm in his and ordered my bags to be brought upstairs by a young boy.

We walked upstairs and turned right.

"Now at this asylum the main house is connected to the asylum over a long hallway which is usually locked and guarded at night. Your room will be before that hallway." He said.

I nodded and he pointed to my door. A guard opened a metal door for us and we walked through the corridor.

We walked into a hospital wing and patients were moving about the floor.

"Butterfly. butterfly. butterfly" an old women with bright blue eyes repeating the same thing over and over.

He walked me downstairs and there was a parlor with a fireplace and some nurses were feeding food to the patients.

"This is where some patients get some free time if they are able. And we try to get them out of there rooms quite a bit."

"We have a medical examining room, a kitchen, the patients rooms, the nurses areas."

He was leading me around still taking and punting things out. One thing caught my eye.

A boy who looked 20 or so was sitting in the parlor by the roaring fire. He was stacking blocks. He was biting his tongue in concentration, and sitting cross legged. This boy had beautiful brown eyes and spiked brown hair. He wore trousers and a simple white loose shirt. He had no shoes and was barefoot.

Suddenly the blocks fell and his face dropped. He started throwing a fit and screamed.

I wanted to comfort him but I was being pulled away by Edward. The nurses rushed to him held him down and stuck him with a syringe.

"Come, let's move along. He does that everyday so it had become routine." Edward stated bored.

"You may go to your room and unpack if you wish. Dinner will be served at 6:00 sharp." He said and walked away.

I made my way to my room thinking about that sad boy.
