s3 A MESSY REUNION s3

(BEFORE BILLY DIED)

---

It had almost been a month since you and Max had broken up. You were the one to cut things off because she started building walls whenever she talked to you. It was like she returned to the same Max she was when she moved here, didn't like you, didn't like anyone really and was just a huge bitch sometimes. You couldn't really blame her after you heard everything going on in her home life, though, especially Billy. He treated her like garbage.

You dealt with her emotional barriers for a while, assuming she was doing that with everyone. It wasn't really surprising to the party when you had talked to them about it.

(A FEW MONTHS BACK)

"Hey guys?" You asked the group as Max shut the door when she left. "I have a question."

The group looked at you to show they were listening.

"Is it just me or has Max suddenly turned into the same max she was when we first met her? She won't tell me anything anymore, she always has some kind of excuse to not talk to me and I've tried giving her space but it's just not working," You said with your brows furrowed.

"You've noticed that too? God it's so exhausting, she's being a total douche! Like a.." Dustin stopped for a moment to think, "a woman-douche! Wodouche!"

"I agree, she's been a completely different person lately, and I don't even like her all that much," Mike said, saying the last part like it was unbelievable.

"She hasn't said anything to me since I accidentally bumped into her. She sends me death glares every now and then for no reason! I don't have to do anything and she just stares," Will rubbed the back of his neck nervously, looking at Lucas. "Lucas?"

"Yeah! Uhh, me too guys?" He finished the sentence as if he wasn't sure if what if saying was true. You looked at Lucas for a minute, but he couldn't even look you straight in the eye. What the hell.

(BACK TO THE ORIGINAL TIME)

You really thought that you and Max could work the whole wall thing out, but all of that hope went away after you over-heard her having a normal conversation with Lucas. You remembered hearing her laugh. She hadn't done that with you in at least a month. You remembered the feeling of your heart breaking. How you opened the door slowly, waiting for them to realize you were there. It felt like forever until Max finally turned around and her face dropped. You held back the tears as you said something along the lines of 'I think I have something I need to do.' The way you put on a fake smile as she tried to run over to you, but you told her you were done putting the effort into something that wasn't gonna last anyways.

You sat on your bed holding a picture of you and Max together that Will took after he stole his brothers camera. You held back your tears as the aching in your throat got stronger. You put the photo in the pocket of your jacket and came out of your room.

"Hey kid, not seeing much of you these days..." Hopper said, putting the cigarette out. "How you holdin' up?"

"Fine," You said while looking for the walkie-talkie, "I'm gonna go over Mikes. Dustin's there with Will and they want to go to the mall." Hopper looked annoyed at the sound of Mikes name, but he knew that you were finally going out and that you needed to heal. You walked out of the door as he said love you to you and you muttered a love you back. You were in no mood to go to the mall today, but apparently there was something important that I needed to see.
