** [Modern AU] **

Today was the day. Today was it. Both of us had been working at the studio and dating for quite some time now. Norman Polk, the movie director. One of the smartest here. My beloved. He was well-known to everyone here. Of course he was. Pretty, smart, responsible, kind. Everything people want.

We fake fight and tease each other a lot but we mean no harm. It's all in good nature. I'd never do anything to actually hurt him. Even if the little devil himself tried to persuade me.

I saw him walking towards the stairs. "Norman," I called out, walking towards him. He seemed to be holding a stack of papers neatly in his arms. "What?" He looked at me. "I need you to come to the rooftop." I said. "I have a special.. surprise for you." I added. He blinked, now immediately curious. He stared at me, as if examining me and thinking. "..What are you up to.." He muttered. I laughed. "You'll see, sweet melody." He blushed at the petname. He simply nodded, and I smiled. "Great. See you then." I kissed his cheek tenderly, then I turned and rushed out of the area.

I was getting impatient. That man sure does know how to be fashionably late. I looked around at the scene, scratching the back of my head. I set up a table with homecooked food that I had made myself, and there was faint classical music playing from an old-fashioned radio nearby. A vase of roses on the table, as well as a white arch in the entrance. It had roses wrapped around it. I, myself, was wearing a suit. I decided to dress accordingly for the occasion.

There he is. The man I was waiting for. He was wearing a nicely tailored vest, along with pants and gloves. He sported the rose crown I had bought for him, and he seemed awed once he walked further onto the rooftop.

"Come, sit." I walked over to the table, pulling out a chair. He walked over to it as well and sat down, and I seated myself across from him. "Sam, what is all this?" He looked around at everything, his eyes shining due to the moonlight. "Part of the surprise." I purred, taking a bite of the food.

"I thought a rather special and meaningful date would be a nice change." I continued. He laughed light-heartedly and smiled brightly and genuinely. "I love this. And I love you. Thank you so much." He tilted his head and closed his eyes as he smiled. He really knew how to melt my heart without even knowing.

About 30 minutes in, I was getting more excited and impatient. We both finished our food, now just talking.

I stood up, stepping closer to him, and plucked a rose from the vase. I put it in my mouth, biting the stem, and offered a hand. "Care to dance?" I purred. He gasped quietly, blushing faintly. He nodded and took my hand, standing up as well. I turned the radio up, then I led him to a roomy area. We got into position, holding hands with his hand on my shoulder and my hand on his waist.

We danced. We waltzed, spun, dipped each other. Having the time of our lives. Smiling and laughing together. It was just us. Nobody would ruin it. Not tonight.

I slowly stopped after a moment, letting go of him. "..Norm," I started. "Wh- Are you okay? Your mood just suddenly changed." He sounded concerned, and I hated to worry him.

"I am okay, of course. But I was.. thinking.." I trailed off, looking away. "About..?" He raised an eyebrow. I looked up at him, then I reached into my pocket.

"You. You're.. You're special to me. I cherish you, and adore you. You make me the happiest I have ever been. The most important song. The sweetest melody in my head." I began to get on one knee, pulling my hand out and holding a box. I heard him gasp quietly again. "And so.. I need to ask. Will you complete my symphony and marry me?" I opened it, revealing a wedding band with four diamonds positioned throughout it. Like a film reel.

He nodded without hesitation, immediately jumping on me and hugging me tightly. "Yes, yes! Of course I will, Sam!" I smiled and grabbed his hand, partially freeing myself. I put the band on his finger, and he immediately grabbed the sides of my face and kissed me.

Norman Lawrence. What a beautiful ring to it. I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with the director I truly love.
