Since Billy blew me off last night, I'm determined to see him this morning. I hang around waiting to see him. When he does show up, he heads into an employee closet. I go to follow but I'm beat to it by Mrs. Wheeler. I stand outside of the closet as they talk. She left the door open slightly. Just enough for me to hear them and not be seen.
"Billy?" Mrs. Wheeler says. Billy doesn't say anything to her. "I understand if you're angry with me. I just... I wanted to explain... why I didn't come last night. It's not you, it's just... I have a family. And I can't do anything that will hurt them. You can understand that, right? But I shouldn't have said that..."
Billy still doesn't say anything. I have to bite my own tongue from screaming out. That asshole was planning on cheating on me with Mike's mom of all people.
"Billy. Billy... Please, will you talk to me?" Mrs. Wheeler asks.
"Stay away from me, Karen," Billy tells her.
I rush back out towards the pool. I don't need Billy saints as he steps out into the sun.
"Looking good, Billy," one of the moms says.
Billy barely even notices I'm her. He almost walks right past me. He looks hungover or high or something.
"Candy," Bill says.
"You look like shit," I tell him.
"Now is not the time Candy," Billy tells me.
He starts to walk away but I grab his arm. He stops and pulls his arm out of my grasp.
"You were going to cheat on me," I state.
"I have to work," Billy tells me.
I shake my head. "You're a piece of shit."
"Can we please just talk later?" Billy asks me.
"Whatever," I say before I walk away.
I sit with Steve in the breakroom of Scoops Ahoy. I have no desire to tell him what happened with Billy even though he continuously asks if I'm okay.
I hear someone at the counter out front. "I'm Dustin."
Steve jumps up from his seat and rushes out to the front of the store.
"Henderson," Steve says. Dustin laughs. "Henderson! He's back! He's back!"
"I'm back!" Dustin says with a laugh. "You got the job!"
"I got the job!" Steve says before he pretends to play a trumpet. "Hey! Oh!"
Steve and Dustin start to do this elaborate handshake that they spent an embarrassing amount of time creating.
"How many children are you friends with?" Robin asks.
I let out a loud laugh. Robin doesn't know the story of Steve's epic night of babysitting.
I sit in a booth with Steve and Dustin as Dustin eats an ice cream sundae. Dustin is telling us all about his girlfriend from science camp.
"No, no. No way. Hotter than Phoebe Cates? No," Steve says.
"Brilliant, too," Dustin tells us. "And she doesn't even care
that my real pearls are still coming in. She says kissing is better without teeth."
I make a face. "That's good I guess."
"Wow. Yeah, that's great. Proud of you, man," Steve tells him. "That's ro... That's kinda romantic. That's like... Wow."
"Hm." Dustin nods. "So do you really just get to eat as much of this as you want?"
"Yeah. I mean, sure. It's not really a good idea for me, though.
