We all scream as the room, now elevator, continues to plummet downwards. I don't even realize how close I am to Steve until I feel his arm wrap around me. I'm grateful for the support otherwise I would have fallen on my ass by now,
"We're going down! We're going down!" Steve shouts.
"Yeah, no shit, Harrington!" Robin yells.
"Why don't these buttons work?" Dustin screams.
"Press the button!" Erica yells at Dustin.
"What do you think I'm doing?" Dustin asks.
"Come on, press something! Just press the button!
Steve shouts.Dustin just keeps screaming.
"Push it harder!" Erica yells.
Suddenly the elevator comes to a halt. I fall to the ground next to Steve. The box from the table falls on top of Steve.
"My groin," Steve says. "It fell on my groin. Dustin! Get this off of me!" I help Dustin pull the box off of Steve. "I can't move."
"Is everyone okay?" Robin asks.
I give Steve my hand and help him stand up.
""Yeah, I'm great, now that I know that Russians can't design elevators!" Steve shouts. He moves towards the control panel.
"I think we've clearly established that those buttons don't work," Robin tells him.
"They're buttons. They have to do something," Steve argues.
"Yeah, if we had a keycard," Robin tells him.
"A what?" Steve asks.
"It's an electronic lock," I explain.
"Same as the loading dock door," Robin states. "If we don't have a keycard, it won't operate, meaning..."
"We're stuck in here," Dustin says.
Robin nods. "Yeah."
"Just so you nerds are aware, I'm supposed to be spending the night at Tina's, and Tina always covers for me," Erica tells us. "But if I'm not home for Uncle Jack's party tomorrow and my mom finds out you four are responsible, she's gonna hunt you down, one by one, and slit your throat."
"I don't care about Tina! Or Uncle Jack's party!" Steve shouts. "Your mom's not gonna be able to find us if we're dead in a Russian elevator!"
"Hey," Dustin points to the ceiling. "What if we climbed out?"
I follow Dustin out through the hatch on the roof with Steve following after me.
I look up and see the shaft of the elevator with no possible thing for us to grab onto to climb out.
"What were you saying about climbing?" Steve remarks.
Steve and I sit on top of the elevator as Robin, Erica, and Dustin sleep.
"You know I've been thinking," I tell Steve.
He laughs. "That's never good."
"If we never escape, I never have to see Billy again," I reason. "And I'll never have to tell anyone we broke up."
"We're gonna get out of here," Steve tells me.
"Just a matter of how and when," I say.
I lay down next to Steve. He wraps his arm around me.
"I don't think I'm going to be able to sleep," I confess.
"So don't," Steve tells me. "We can figure out a way to get off of this elevator."
