Eighteen months later...
The carriage jostled a little as it moved over the unevenness cobblestones.
King Matias Pyro-Bjorndottir stole a glance at his wife. His queen.
Her hand rested on the swell of her abdomen, her gaze on the beams of golden autumn sunlight.
He had caught her standing by windows often-her hand raised and fingers dancing in the sunlight. As if she could still somehow force the light to bend to her will. It had gotten better with time, but she still tried to use what had been lost.
"You're staring," said Cal.
Matias grinned. "I only have eyes for the most beautiful woman in the world."
She smiled. "Are you ready?"
His grin turned into a smirk. "I am always ready."
The carriage stopped and the door opened. Matias helped Cal to her feet and he helped her out. The crowd cheered as the king and queen stood before them.
"Good afternoon," Cal announced. "Today, we lay down the first stone of amending serious wrongs. Among the many wrongs is the magic genocide-the purposeful killing of magic users in an attempt to eradicate them."
Cal moved to a large statue covered in a large cloth tarp and pulled it off. Matias covered his mouth. It was a bronze statue with four figures on it. He could recognize three of them.
The Everlight, a young Queen Marilyn, a young Miles Gomez, and another young man that he didn't recognize.
"These four are prominent figures during the genocide and Queen Ashlynn Pyro's reigns of terror," Cal continued. "And to educate our youth, King Matias and I have decided to build the Connor Trupp Institute of Education."
Matias walked towards a middle aged man with greying sandy blonde hair. He unsheathed his sword and handed it to him.
"Mister Trupp, if you will," he said, gesturing towards the gold ribbon.
Devland Trupp took the sword into his hands and sliced through the ribbon.
Matias took his sword back and crossed over to his wife as eager onlookers shuffled into the Institute. "To new beginnings," he said and kissed the queen. His queen.
"To new beginnings."
