Silence. One would think that silence would be silent. Unfortunately, that was not always the case. This silence felt almost deafening. Not a single noise filled the surrounding area, and the girl did not dare to open her eyes. Maybe this is what it felt like to be dead... Yeah, right.

Sage slowly peeled her eyes open. Above her was a dark concrete ceiling. She moved to lift her head but stopped the motion abruptly when a sharp pain travelled down her spine. She yelped at the stinging sensation and halted any further movement. Shit.

While remaining as still as possible, her eyes took in the place. She was in a small room made out of four light-grey concrete walls. There was one light bulb hanging from the ceiling in the middle of the room. The light it emitted was dim, but the tone was warm. On the wall to her left was a window; makeshift curtains prevented her from seeing outside.

She looked to the wall opposite the window and saw a wooden door. It was shut, maybe even locked from the outside. A huff passed her lips when she realised that there were no clues to her whereabouts in the room.

She slowly shifted her weight on the bed she was lying on. Her body was covered with a dark blue blanket. It was heavy, but it kept her warm. She tried to recall what had happened, but her mind remained blank.

Her body badly ached, and she was worried that if she were to move, she would break another bone in her body. Helplessness consumed her when she realised she could not make a run for it or defend herself against anyone. All she knew was that she was alone, injured and in a place she had never been before.

The silence began creeping back into her mind. Not a single noise could be heard from behind the door. Maybe the girl was brought here to die on her own. A shiver ran down her spine at the thought of being abandoned by everyone.

"I will be right back. I'm getting help."

That phrase brought the girl a feeling of familiarity as if she had only heard it a few hours ago. She thought hard for a few moments before it all hit her at once. Vi said that. The cannery, the explosion, the pain, Mylo, Claggor, Vander. Everything.

Her breathing picked up with every memory that hit her. Soon she was gasping for air, breathing in and out almost back to back. Her heart hammered in her chest whilst panic sat in. She moved a hand to grab the fabric of her shirt above her chest.
