As Wooyoung's birthday creeped closer, his anxiety started worsening.
Every fleeting glance at San broke his heart into millions of tiny pieces. The panick attacks became more frequent and his heart fell more with each passing day.
He felt numb to everything around him; he wasn't sure if it was a good thing or not.
It seemed like every time he looked at the other, he couldn't help but think that he would be gone in an instant. His thoughts were never far from the dark cloud of depression that hung over his head.
As he sat there in his room drowning in his miserable thoughts, a hurried knock snapped him out of the state.
"Come in."
The door opened and Yeosang stood there his eyes immediately found Wooyoung.
"Come to the throne room. Quick."
He almost shouted.Wooyoung frowned but got up quickly and followed Yeosang to the room.
Once inside it was clear that something was wrong. Everyone else seemed too busy talking among themselves to pay attention to the prince who was standing by the door.
He tried to catch their attention but no one even acknowledged them. Finally, the door shut behind him and he had finally taken a seat on his throne. He looked over at San, who looked like he was about to break down any any second. His hands gripped the armrest of the throne so tightly that his knuckles turned pale.
The emperor looked strangely calm but anyone could make out the anger swimming in those eyes.
Wooyoung's curiosity only grew with each passing second.
The door opened and Wooyoung's heart dropped to his stomach. He slapped a hand on his mouth trying to muffle the surprised gasp.
Yoohyeon was being dragged in mercilessly by two bulky guards.
There was an angry red scar on her cheekbone and she looked paler than Wooyoung had ever seen her.
Wooyoung looked at San, who looked so furious that if looks could kill, the guards would be at the gates of hell already.
She was roughly pushed to the ground in front of the Emperor's throne.
"Kim Yoohyeon." The Emperor said frighteningly calm.
The said girl didn't dare to raise her head. Wooyoung could see her hands tremble on the ground.
"Are you aware of what you have done? Seducing the crown prince is punishable by death."
Yoohyeon whimpered, "I'm sorry..."
Her tone sounded so broken and she had tears running down her face. She was truly crying for her life.
"But that is not all. You also have brought disgrace upon your own family. A lowly commoner such as yourself has no place among our esteemed people."
Wooyoung could practically feel the fury emitting from San.
"And not only that. I am sure you are fully aware that the prince is a married man. Have you got no shame? Seducing a married man for your own pleasure."
Yoohyeon shook her head violently, wanting to explain herself. But she couldn't. No one would listen to her anyways.
"Father," San began in barely controlled anger.
"She did not seduce me. I loved her too. We loved each other long before Wooyoung came here."
He spat glaring at Wooyoung with so much resentment that he felt his heart constrict painfully in his chest. He could hear the guards gasp behind him as they saw him in front of the Imperial throne.
Their faces contorted into expressions filled with disgust.
"Seducing someone of noble blood is still punishable by death!"
Some minister yelled. San whipped his head towards the said man and one look was enough for him to quiver.
It wouldn't be surprising if they actually killed the man right away
"San...Please calm down."
Yoohyeon begged. Her voice broke at the end, sounding vulnerable yet defiant.
The prince looked back down at her. His eyes softened slightly but there was still anger in them.
He wanted to do something but he couldn't.
A few moments passed until the Emperor's anger seemed to subside a bit.
"You shall be executed tomorrow morning." He said with authority in his voice leaving no room for arguments.
"Father. Please." San's voice became softer.
"You can send her into exile or ban her from entering the empire ever again. Just please do not execute her. It's not her fault." San almost pleaded.
Yoohyeon immediately broke down, her hands coming up to muffle her sobs.
San stepped down and kneeled beside her, wrapping an arm around her shaking shoulders.
Wooyoung looked away.
The ministers' reactions had become more violent and San was thankful when another guard appeared, knocking one of them out with a hard kick.
Yoohyeon cried even harder than before, hiccuping between sobs.
The Empress squeezed her eyes shut and her husband's eyes widened in rage.
"How dare you embrace another person when your husband is right here?!" He bellowed making the whole court flinch.
"Your actions will reflect upon this house and the Empire's name."
He hated hearing this from him but he knew better than anyone that San would never leave Yoohyeon alone after something like this.
Not without some type of physical fight happening.
San pulled away and glared at him with such hatred that it sent shivers through Wooyoung's entire body.
"You have brought disgrace to the Royal family's honor." The Emperor said, disappointment reeking from his voice.
"Kim Yoohyeon will be executed tomorrow at dawn in front of all the palace officials, all the guards and servants. Let this serve as a warning for any future disrespect. And if you try to do anything to stop it, then my wrath will be far worse than you could ever imagine," The Emperor threatened, eyes cutting right through Yoohyeon.
Yoohyeon stared up at San, her eyes wide in disbelief and fear.
She shook unctrollably. The tears continued to flow relentlessly down her cheeks.
San pulled Yoohyeon closer against his side and rested his chin atop her head. He ran his trembling fingers through her hair as if to comfort her.
Wooyoung averted his gaze again, unable to bear seeing them both being put under such immense pressure because of him.
He knew how much San loved the young maid and now this was tearing him apart inside. He was terrified for her, knowing that she would lose everything because of him.
Wooyoung felt the guilt crawl up at his heart and tear it apart piece by piece as he listened to her soft cries and muffled sobs.
It pained him that he caused all of this and he didn't know how to fix it. He just wanted to disappear.
But he couldn't, not when he was responsible for it.He had caused this and he wasn't going to forgive himself for it.
