(Nightingale's POV)
The conversation in the parlor wasn't very informative. Why I was here, why they wanted to keep me in exactly. I understood it was for my safety but surely there were other ways to protect someone, wasn't there? Another plan could be formed, right? Why did everything always lead to me being hidden, to me being set aside and kept from the world? It was infuriating to say the least.
After the not-so-informative talk, Brigsby took me back to my room, where I immediately questioned him.
"What was that all about Brigsby? Why am being held here, hidden? I know it's to protect me, but from what? Or who? I know those men, why do they look the same, maybe younger even than they once did? Why can't I recall them more clearly? Who are they exactly? What's the real reason I'm here Brigsby?" I unleashed these questions, barely letting him open his mouth to speak, till finally he grabbed my shoulders and pulled into a hug.
"Nightingale, you ask too many things right now. What I can tell you, is that you do know those men, those men are your future, past, and present. Trust those men, they'll keep you safe and do what's right for you. And we're here because you were attacked, here with them is the only thing protecting you now. The creatures... I know you saw them... they're after you for what you are... what you can do. I have never lied to you dear, trust in these words... for they are what will keep you safe." He expressed with absolute seriousness and certainty. I knew I could trust him, he was my Brigsby, my friend and the man most like a parent to me. He raised me and I owe him to at least trust him in these matters.
"Thank you, Brigsby. I'm sorry if I asked too much... I just, it's all very confusing." I admitted. He smiled and opened his arms to me in a big hug. I welcomed it with open arms, hugging him as a daughter would hug her father.
"In time, sweet nightingale. In time, you'll have all your answers. Get some rest, today has been quite exciting." He said as he kissed my forehead and released me from the hug. I nodded, walking over to the bathroom and preparing to take a nice bath to relax me before bed.
Brigsby said goodnight and left me to myself for the rest of the night. I sighed deeply when I got into the tub, the hot water embracing me as I sat down. I relaxed, leaning back against the side of the large clawfoot bathtub. The dim lighting in here felt nice, I had added some chamomile to the bath, hoping it would help me sleep.
Sitting in the tub, looking out the large window across from me... I couldn't help but feel like someone... or something was watching me.
That eerie feeling kept creeping up on me. Eventually I pulled the drain and feeling more tense, I grabbed the towel I had waiting for me and wrapped myself in it as I climbed out of the tub. I entered my room again and slipped on the silky pale pink nightgown that awaited me. Drying my hair as I sat on the bed, I could only hope I'd be able to sleep.... But as the night drew on, I laid awake in bed, my hair dried know and falling over my shoulders as I sat up.
I tried to read, I tried to hum to myself, I tried to count sheep.. and as I drifted to sleep, I quickly awoke to that dark feeling again. I looked out the window, quickly closing the curtains again before deciding to have a look around this place, this new home I was so unfamiliar with. Maybe that's why the eerie feeling, I just didn't know this place well enough yet.
Placing my hand on the polished wooden railing of the main staircase and lifting my nightgown a bit with my other hand, I slowly, and as quietly as possible, descended to the first floor. The lights are dimmed but are enough to let me see my way to the parlor room. As I drew closer a new sound from a different room caught my attention. I walked till the sound was loud and clear, the door to the room was ajar so I peeked inside to see one of the Masters alone, in the very dim light, playing the piano before him.
I snuck in, facing his back. I wasn't able to tell which Master it was... but I had a feeling it was one of them at least. I sat in the deep red embroidered chair nearest me, and listened. At one point I closed my eyes and let my mind settle as the beautiful tune played on. When it came to a subtle end, I heard the clearing of a man's throat.... the man who had been playing unknowingly for me. I opened my eyes to be met by him, Master Yoongi was turned towards me, legs crossed, elbow resting on the piano he was playing as his head rested on that very hand, eyes.... those eyes that seemed to be a deep burgundy or a brown so deep that it only seemed like a red hue might be in them.
"Did you enjoying it, little bird?" He asked, a stoic expression on his face gave nothing away.
"I did, you... you play beautifully, Master Yoongi." I replied, a sudden smirk played on his lips and he stood, walking closer to me and holding his hand out.
"You should be getting your beauty rest... though I don't think you need it." He said, his hand holding gently onto mine as he pulled me up to meet him. He smiled and lifted my hand to his lips, kissing the back of my hand gently.
"Shall I walk you back to the stairs?" He asked.
"I... I would like that, though I don't know if I can sleep." I admitted.
"And why is that?" he asked, looking me over, I could feel his eyes on mine.
"I think.. I thought I was being watched... but it might just be that I'm new here." I said, he looked at me and nodded.
"I'll check the grounds for anyone. Why don't we get you back to your room." He said softly, showing no sign of fear. He also wasn't mocking me for feeling like I was being watched. He held my hand and walked me back to the staircase, we arrived just in time for Master Jin to enter from the front.
"Well, hello little bird." He smiled warmly.
"Jin, would you be so kind to see our precious girl back to her room. She felt like she was being watched, so I'm going to get Namjoon and we'll check the grounds." Yoongi said to Jin, who stood there and nodded.
"Of course, it would be my pleasure. Come little bird." He smiled and held his arm out for me to take. I hooked my arm with his but stopped, as something puzzled me.
"Master Yoongi, you would only see me to the stairs. But you're trusting Master Jin to take me to my room, why wouldn't you escort me to my room?" I asked, puzzled as to why one would go the extra way and one would not.
"Little bird, Jin has way more strength in resistance than I do. If I were to take you to your room.... I fear things would happen before you're ready for them to happen." He said simply, a hint of something more alluring in his ending words though, something that stayed with me as Jin brought me back to my room.
"As resistant as I am... I won't go further than here. Get some sleep, little bird." He said as he leaned down and kissed my forehead. His lips were warm and soft, I liked the feel of them on my forehead. I slept dreamlessly that night, waking to the sounds of birds chirping their joyful tune, and the opening and closing of my bedroom door.
"Nightingale, it's time to wake. You don't want to sleep all day, today's a big day." Brigsby's voice made me open my eyes and sit up in bed.
"What's happening today that's so big?" I asked.
"The first step." He smiled.
"First step of what?" I inquired.
"You'll see. Now bathe and dress quickly, Breakfast will be served soon." He said as he laid out a dress for me, and started to run a bath before he left me to do as I needed. I climbed out of bed, undressing on my way to the bathroom. After a good washing, I got out, dried off, dressed and brushed my hair out before braiding it as best as I could. I slipped on my slippers and headed downstairs, making my way to the dinning room where Brigsby was waiting with his newspaper in hand and breakfast in front of him.
I sat down and a plate of food was put in front of me. Eggs, toast, bacon, sausage, a bowl of oatmeal, a bowl of freshly cut fruit, and a croissant were sitting before me.
"This seems like a bit much." I replied, looking at all the food.
"You don't have to eat all of it, I think the Masters just want to be sure you're taken care of." Brigsby replied.
I did eat quite a bit, but I couldn't eat all of it. With a full belly I leaned back and sighed.
"I feel like I need a nap." I smiled. Brigsby chuckled and folded the paper before setting it down.
"There's no time for that, the Masters should be awake soon." He said. I nodded and sat up more, the doors to the dinning hall opened and in walked all four men. Namjoon trailed behind the others a bit.
"Good Morning little bird, were you able to sleep?" Jin asked as he sat down across from me.
"Yes, thank you again." I replied.
"There's nothing to fear with us around, we told you we'd keep you safe." Yoongi added as he came around behind me, placed a kiss on top of my head and sat down next to me. I only nodded as my voice didn't want to seem to work.
"After breakfast, I will need to pack. Jin will stay back here and keep an eye on our little Bird. Is that all right, little bird?" Namjoon asked me, gazing at me with those intense eyes of his.
"Y...yes." I spoke sheepishly under that gaze of his. He smiled, his dimples making me blush as he picked up the paper and began to read as he ate the sausage on his plate. Once again I noticed these men were only eating meat. Brigsby caught me staring and nudged me, motioning for me to eat up. I did, slowly letting the thoughts that were starting to form in my mind... slip away.
That evening I was playing chess with Brigsby and a loud bang came from the main hall. Brigsby and I bolted out of our chairs and ran into the main hall. In the front Foyer, the door was wide open, but nothing was there.
"Stay, Nightingale." Brigsby said as he held his hand up at me, signaling me to not move from my spot. I did as I was told, I had no reason not to listen to Brigsby. So, I watched as he moved forward towards the large open doors."Masters?" He called, not too loudly but then... he never really shouted that often anyway.
"Brigsby?" Master Hoseok was at the top of the stairs suddenly, he trotted down a ways and stopped as he saw the opened front doors.
"Master Hoseok-" Brigsby went to speak when a gust of wind picked up and swept in through the foyer. I closed my eyes for barely a second when the wind came and suddenly it was gone. When I opened my eyes, I could see Hoseok had closed the door, he slowly looked back at Brigsby.
"Brigs, take Nightingale upstairs to her room please. Do not come out for any reason till either Myself or one of the others come to get you." He said, his voice was not as bright as I had heard it all these years. No, something was wrong and he was behaving strangely.
"Yes, right away Master Hoseok. Nightingale, let's be quick." Brigsby said as he held his hand out for mine. I looked at Hoseok, he had his eyes on me. I wanted to say something... to ask so many questions but I knew it would be pointless at this moment. I placed my hand in Brigsby's and hurried up the staircase with him. Down the long hall and into the safety of my bedroom.
"Brigsby, what's going on?" I asked him.
"Sshh, we have to be quiet now. Don't worry." Brigsby said in a low whisper as he pulled a chair up beside my bed. I sat there for a while doing nothing, trying to listen in... but there were no sounds.
Brigsby wouldn't let me near the windows, he also didn't want me peeking out the door of my room either, but I wanted to know what was going on. Brigsby paced and then he would sit and delve deep into his own thoughts,He'd get up and pace again after a bit... by the time he'd done his third round of this... pace, sitting, thinking thing, there was a knock on the door.
"Brigsby, all is clear now." The muffled voice came through the door."Come Nightingale, let us join the others downstairs." Brigsby said, opening the door and reaching for my hand. I followed him back down to the first floor, we met the others in the parlor room. Yoongi was leaning against the piano, Hoseok was leaning against the wall near the door, Jin was sitting in a chair across from Namjoon, who was just closing a book and placing it on his lap as we entered the room.
"Are you alright, little bird?" Jin asked, his warm eyes made me reply by nodding to him. "Good." He smiled softly and looked back to Namjoon.
"I think we should be honest, wouldn't you agree?" He asked him. Namjoon gave a single nod and looked at me."Come sit, Little bird." He leaned over and patted the footstool in front of him. I looked at Brigsby, he nodded to let me know it was okay. I made my way over to the footstool and sat down. My legs touching his as I sat in front of him, he looked down at me and then looked at the others. "We're sure this is the right thing. She's not of that age yet, I thought we were going to wait?" Yoongi seemed to ask, slight concern in his rough voice. "That was the plan, but as usual... things don't turn out the way we plan them. I think our precious Nightingale deserves to know the truth, after all.... all of this is because of her." Namjoon said, he held his hand out for mine and when I placed my hand in his, she grinned. "Are you ready for a story, Little bird?" He asked me. "Y-yes." I managed to let out, his eyes intimidated me in the most intense way. "Alright then.... but, no once upon a time bullshit. This is a very real story, little bird... it's your story." He grinned and released my hand, sitting back in the chair as folded his hands in his lap. Whatever he was about to say... I knew I wanted to hear it, needed to hear it. I'd always been kept in the dark about everything... where I came from, my parents, why have I always been with Brigsby? I might actually get the truth now....
