The fireplace in the room seemed to roar and dance as Namjoon spoke.
"Long ago, there was a vail. It protected the world from the creatures of the other side. Not all creatures were bad of course, but many were horrible, evil and wanted to just destroy everything. One day.. a human man fell in love with a woman from the other side of the vail. She was beautiful, radiant, and she alone was the keeper of the vail. Her kind, once called Celestials, now known to many as the songbirds. See, they sung and put up the vail to protect both sides. The humans, and the more... special creatures." He started to explain.
"You, little bird. Are the only living descendant of those pretty songbirds. Only you can protect both sides. The Vail has been gone for many years, and is only as strong as the songbird who puts it up. You're a powerful, little bird. More powerful than you could ever know." He smiled gently as he looked at me. I was so confused, if I was so powerful... how come they had to save me, how come they have to protect me?
"In time, your power will come into full bloom." He kept his eyes focused on me till another joined in the explanation.
" We were supposed to wait till your Twenty First Year. Unfortunately, things didn't pan out exactly so."Master Yoongi spoke, I glanced at him only when Namjoon's eyes shifted to him.
"We must protect you till then, because your powers are not ready yet." He said casually.
"Not... ready?" I questioned.
"Precious bird, your kind was very powerful.. however it takes 21 years for those powers to take hold. It used to be tradition for one of your kind to have protectors, even after you retain your power... you will lose most of it to putting up the vail." Master Jin explained.
"The vail... I have to... but you said it's gone?" I was a little confused.
"It is. As I mentioned, it weakened when the last celestial.. or Songbird died. Your mother would have used her power to put it up, however... fate had other plans for her. She bared you, gave you life and bestowed you her power in the form of... well.... us." Namjoon tried to explain. "We were not as we are now, we were darkness... we were lust, we were sinners and fallen creatures. However, your mother blessed us, made us immortal and quite difficult to be erased from the world. The only flaw of course... is our sickness." Namjoon sat back again, his hands resting on the arms of the chair he sat in.
"Sickness?" I asked.
"Yes, sweet bird." Hoseok responded, drawing my attention to him. "We were given this new life and a promise of a better future as long as you live, and you... can heal us. Your blood, keeps us from the sickness that threatens our very being." He informed me. My eyes widened.
"You're... vampires?" I questioned. Namjoon was the first to chuckle.
"No, little bird. We are not the blood thieves of the night. We are far more dangerous." Master Yoongi smirked when he spoke.
"Our prime objective has been to protect you till you're old enough. Then, make sure you're protected till your last breath. Which hopefully won't be for a very very long time. You're not immortal yet, but once your powers come to bloom... you will be. Your whole genetic coding will awaken to what you truly are. The unfortunate part though little bird.. is your blood doesn't just heal us... it can do other things for other creatures. Make others nearly invincible, make them stronger, faster, far more of a threat." Namjoon expressed.
"Many of those creatures wouldn't hesitate to drain you of all your blood. Vampires included." He sat forward again.
"So you see little bird. You are special to us, and you are the only one who can save us, as we are the only ones who can protect you."
"Our kinds have been intertwined for thousands of years, little bird. We only want to do what we promised your mother, Brigsby here has kept his word, demon as he is, he's not one of the bad ones. He is quite empathetic, which made it easy to entrust your growing up to him." Hoseok explained. "He's a good man, and he's done right by you when we couldn't. Because of what will happen, we needed to not be around for your growing. Even now... we shouldn't be this near you yet, you're not ready. And We certainly shouldn't be telling you what we have."
"Make no mistake sweet bird, there's much more to tell. Just know that many are after you, you carry a certain scent, a sweet smell that allures dangerous creatures to you. It's in their nature, it's why we must keep you inside for now." Yoongi added.
"Yes, till we can be sure they're not near... we just need to keep you here till your 21st. Then you can explore more, it's still a necessity to keep at least one of us by your side always, but we won't have to keep you inside once the vail is put up." Master Jin assured me. He knew, they all knew I didn't want to be locked up forever. I'd been kept away from everything for too long. Of course they knew, they're the ones who have kept me hidden... and safe.
"So those... bird things?" I questioned.
"Ravenmockers. They whisper words of madness, taunts to drive their prey mad. If you hear them, precious bird, you need to tell one of us right away." Hoseok said.
"Yes, no matter what. middle of the night, whenever, you come and find one of us and we'll handle it. If they're close enough for you to hear them, then they're too close." Yoongi added.
"The Master's are right, Nightingale. You must warn them when you hear them, it's of the upmost importance." Brigsby finally spoke.
"Why is... any of this.. I..." I didn't know how to react to all of this. Because I was some special creature myself? Because of my blood? My genetics which make me different.... special? Why can't I be like any other girl from my story books? Why can't my Prince charming and I adventure together and love so passionately that it moves the sun? If I said these things out loud... I would be called foolish.
"It's fate, sweet bird. Don't worry, once the vail is up we will be safe." Jin said.
"How? You said creatures would still come for me?" I questioned.
"We'll be on the other side of the vail, they won't be able to find you." Master Hoseok added.
"It will be difficult to find you once the vail is up. See, once it's up, your power wont be detectable. The scent of you will dissipate into practically nothing. So, while we will be living among our own, protecting the humans from any more harm... and giving them a chance to rebuild their lives and grow as humans do.... Even in our demon and creature infested world, they won't be able to find you like they can now." Namjoon explained. "Our scents will also mask the small trace you'll leave behind as well. Making it impossible for them to find you."
"The only trouble for now, is getting you to live till your twenty first." Yoongi said.
"This is why it's so important for you to stay inside Nightingale." Brigsby stressed, I sighed and nodded. Namjoon pulled me up with him as he stood.
"It won't be forever, precious bird. You'll be free in time. Till then, we'll do our best to make sure you're comfortable. Is there anything you'd like? New dresses? New shoes? We'll get them for you." Namjoon said with a slight smile.
"I'll bring her catalogs, so she can choose." Master Hoseok added. I nodded in agreement, and one by one they kissed my forehead and headed out to do whatever it was that they do. Brigsby and decided to read in the reading room. It was Master Namjoon's favorite place according to him. I could see how it could be, so many books about so many things. I could live in this room, the smell of books was dear to me, maybe because Namjoon always brought me books, this room smelled like him too...
Over the next month, it became routine for me to find the rooms that the Master's loved most. I found that each of them had a particular scent, and the scent was strongest in certain rooms. It became kind of a mission to find their favorite rooms, it was a welcome distraction from the fact that I couldn't be outside and explore.
Namjoon favored the reading room, Jin favored the kitchens. Master Yoongi favored the piano room, I could see why, large windows with floor length curtains, shiny marble floors with a very soft rug covering a good portion of it. The chairs in this room were also comfy, plus the pretty fireplace.
On the third floor, there was a room that had a wall of mirrors, it looked like the rooms in my old picture books with ballerinas in them, like a dance room. Brigsby explained the room belonged to Master Hoseok, according to Brigsby he had a love for dance and the room was a place for him to unwind and find some peace within himself. I suppose it was like that with each of the others and the rooms they frequented as well.
The nights seemed darker, and the Masters were away more often. When we were together though it was often all us, or at least most of us. Namjoon and Yoongi seemed to be the busiest. I didn't know why they missed a lot of game nights and dinners but I was starting to worry about how much less I was seeing them.
The unfortunate reality was that there was nothing I could do, they were most likely protecting me and I couldn't exactly act selfish about how much.. or little time they gave me when they were out there risking their lives to protect mine... even if they were immortal, they could still die in certain ways... and that made me worry.
There was a storm brewing, it made the morning skies darker than normal, and the wind was picking up more and more. The branches outside my window were tapping against the glass steadily. I laid awake in my bed wondering when things would calm down. None of this would calm down till my 21st though... possibly, which means I had to deal with this for over 10 months more.
The branches tapped through the night, I fell asleep to their steady tapping sounds. However it the breaking of glass and the large gust of wind that blew my books off the table, some books blew open and pages started to rip and fly around, the cute stationary that Brigsby gave me was fluttering around my room, I didn't notice the cuts on my arm as I whipped the covers off of me and ran for my bedroom door as soon as I heard their voices..
Run from us...
And turn to dust...
breaking bones...
And wailing moans...
cry little birdy-
DIE little birdy
I yanked open my door and ran as fast as I could, I felt the sting in my arm then, noticing that my long cream covered nightgown had blood seeping through my right sleeve.
"HELP! I Hear them!" I yelled as loud as I could muster, screaming for anyone. I couldn't see through my sudden tears and slipped, I fell and landed against something soft but firm. My tears were dried by him... my Prince... Namjoon had caught me and held me close to him.
"It's alright Nightingale. Jin, take her to the Kitchen. Yoongi, east side, Hoseok, take west end, and I'll cover the rest." Namjoon instructed, gently passing me from his strong hold into Jin's warmer, softer embrace.
"Come now sweet bird. Let's get us something warm to drink. Ah.. and lets get you out of these wet clothes." Jin said, smiling gently as he led me to the other side of the overly large home. I was taken to a room that was white and gold everywhere, very fancy and pristine.
"This is my room, sweet bird. You can visit me anytime you want." He smirked, like he was saying more with his words than I was catching on. Master Jin opened his closet and rummaged around for something. When he found what he needed he entered the bathroom attached to his room and entered the bedroom again with a first aid kit.
"First, we need to get this off of you. Don't be embarrassed sweet bird." He said to me. I stood in front of him, worried for him to see me undress.
"Here, I'll turn around, and you remove that and use this throw blanket to cover yourself. I need to see your arm though, Sit here when you're done little bird." He instructed me to sit on the bench at the end of his bed. I nodded feeling comfortable that he was turning around, and he did. He kept his back to me as I pulled my nightgown over my head. I only realized how damp it was once I took it off, it must have been raining too and the rain got blown in by the wind.
I pulled the blanked up to cover myself and sat down, keeping the blanket tucked under my arms securely.
"I.. I'm covered." I let him know. He smiled as he turned and sat beside me. Getting the first aid kit out he used the tweezers to remove two small particles of glass that had managed to get stuck in my arm. I winced a little but Master Jin was gentle and patient as he cleaned each wound and blew gently on each before wrapping a bandage around my upper arm where the cuts were.
"There we go, you should heal quickly. Another plus to being you." He smiled at me and gently kissed the bandage. He helped me dress in the oversized shirt he had given to me, it was much shorter than my night gown, but at least the important parts were covered.
"I should get you back to bed sweet Nightingale." Jin stood as he spoke, gently pulling me up with him. I went willingly, following him back down the hall, he didn't take me to the other side of the house though, he led me to another room, this one was mostly greens and paisley patterns on the chairs that sat against the window on the opposite side of the room.
"Here you go. You'll stay here the night. Hoseok will be back soon I'm sure, get into bed and sleep sweet bird." Jin said as he showed me to the bed, also covered in a forest green comforter with golden patterns.
"This is Master Hoseok's room?" I asked.
"Yes, precious bird. I would have you stay the night with me, but I've already spent a lot of time close to you and... well I don't think it's safe for me to sleep in the same room as you as well." He answered honestly. I didn't really know what he meant, but I nodded and accepted it, they'd protected me so I didn't really see a reason to not trust them.
I climbed into bed and watched as Jin slowly left the room, settled down and tried to sleep but I wondered if Master Hoseok would be okay with me sleeping in his bed like this.
