                                                     Hawkins Indiana, 1980

As I ran through the halls, I heard sirens wailing. Lights flashing, hurting my head. I had to keep my focus. I had to escape. Images flashed through my head of the people I had killed to get here. I left all my brothers and sisters behind. Most of them didn't want to come anyways. They all loved him. Papa. The sick man who trapped us here. I didn't kill him. I couldn't. And the man who helped me get here. I had lost him. I don't know where he went, I don't even know his name.

I couldn't focus on that. I had to escape. I crawled through the pipe that the man had shown me. It led to the woods. I just kept running. Thorns, sticks and other things were ripping at my feet but I had to keep going. I couldn't stop. They'd surely get to me if I stopped. I ended up running across a house. They had clothes on a line. I took a white shirt and put it over my hospital like gown.
A boy, who looked to be about 12-13 came out. I bolted around the corner of the shed but he must have seen me. He called out.
"Hello?" he called. He creeped out towards the shed. I tried to use my powers but I couldn't. "I won't hurt you... I promise."
I peaked around the corner. He was on the other side of the shed. "Hi there." I hid again. "I swear I won't hurt you." I peaked out again, this time further. He smiled at me. "I'm Steve." I crept out further. "What's your name?"
      "Zero." I said quietly.
"That's interesting..." he replied. What are you doing behind my shed? Are you hurt?" I shook my head.
"I'm fine." I felt my stomach growl.
"Are you hungry? We have some leftovers from dinner last night." I nodded.
"That would be... nice." I said.
"Follow me." he said. I followed him in the back door and into the kitchen. "I hope you like pizza!" I stared at him blankly.
       "What is 'pizza?'" I asked.
"What? You've NEVER had pizza?" he asked, looking very shocked as if I just said I'm from mars. I shook my head. "Well try it now." He said, putting a plate of two squares of pizza in front of me. I took a bite.
I didn't quite know how to react. It was good. Very good. "It tastes.. good. A lot better than the food we ate in the lab-" I stopped.
"What lab? Should I call someone?"
      "No!" I started. "I didn't mean... uhm.."
"Is that why your hair is shaved? Why your name is Zero?" I sat in silence. I knew I had messed up and that I'd have to get out of there. I tried to use my powers to get out of there, but I quickly realized I couldn't do so because I have no clue where I am, or where to go besides the lab.
You see, along with being able to do things in my mind like most of the kids, I could teleport, but there were limitations. I couldn't teleport without being able to know where I am and where I'm going. I can also teleport items, but its the same with myself. I have to know where the item is, what it is, and where I want it to go. Exactly.
"I have to go." I said.
"Wait! I won't tell anyone you're here! You can stay in my basement." He offered.

And so I did. I stayed with Steve for about 4 months. I showed him my powers, explained what had happened. Well, mostly. I might've left the whole killing people thing out.

We made a little book of rules for if I were to stay there for awhile. One of the rules, included staying out of the woods unless Steve was with me, so I wouldn't get lost. One day, Steve was at school. I saw a white van come down his road and I saw Papa come out of it. He knocked on doors. I assume he was looking for me, so I bolted into the woods. Steve was right. I got lost. I couldn't find my way back. After wandering aimlessly, I found a neighborhood. I spent about 2 weeks there. Stealing food from their kitchen with my powers, stealing clothes, those kinds of things.
Someone called the cops on me. Reasonably. I didn't know the sheriff of Hawkins was in the backyard. I walked to the window to do what I normally did, but he grabbed me. I screamed.
"Shh, I'm not going to hurt you, kid." The man said. I stopped screaming. "I'm Jim Hopper. Care to tell me your name?"
"Zero." I replied. He seemed caught off guard by my name.
"Okay... Zero, where are your parents?" He asked.
"I don't have any." I replied "And I don't want any!" I said trying to yank my arm away from him. His grip tightened, not enough to hurt, just to keep me there.
"Okay, no parents. Got it. How about we go get breakfast, okay?"
"Okay.." I replied. He walked me to his car and sat me in the backseat. He then walked up to the house, knocked on the door and updated the lady on the situation. He then walked back to the car, and got in the drivers seat. We went out for breakfast, and at the end, he decided to let me live with him.

I lived with Hopper for about a year before someone found out about me. Hopper lied and said he was going to take me to CPS. Unfortunately, he didn't want to get caught with a child that wasn't his, so he turned me in. I had 11 foster families over the span of a year until Mr. Darlin took me in. He kind of understood me. He treated me like I was his own child, though I never called him Dad. I had reserved that for Hopper.

Mr. Darlin had a son named Jack. Jack was 17 when I was brought in though, so we didn't bond that much. When Jack turned 19 he moved out and went to college. I stayed with Mr. Darlin, until I had a certain.. call to go back to Hawkins in 1985.
