Caleb

Half an hour and several unconscious guards later, we were still in the warehouse. I sighed heavily as we reached another door. I reached forward and jiggled the knob. Locked. I took a step back and put my foot through the center. “Caleb! What the hell?”

Kolbe glared at me, annoyed. I shrugged and stuck my hand through the opening, unlocking the door from the inside. I pushed it open and stepped inside. “No windows, what a surprise.” I said through gritted teeth. We should have been gone by now.

“Stop! Don’t move or I’ll shoot!” I froze in place. Wait, was that a kid? I turned around and saw a guy around my age holding a gun in his hand, aimed directly at my head. “Do you even know how to use that?” I scoffed. To my surprise, Kolbe glared at me.

She strode over to him, ignoring the weapon in his hand. She grabbed the gun out of his hand and went to unload it. She raised her eyebrow at the guy. “Christian, the safety’s on.” He looked at her, confused. “Never mind.” She slid the gun into his pocket and pointed to me. “That’s Caleb. We’re leaving now. If you try to stop us, we’ll kick your ass. Understood?” I stifled a grin as Christian paled. Kolbe looked over at me. “Coming?” I nodded and walked with her, away from Christian. He stood behind us, looking a bit like a lost puppy.

I nudged Kolbe and jerked my head back toward him “How did you meet him?”             “He was my guard.” She said simply. I burst out laughing. “What?” I raised my eyebrows.                                         “You were in there for him for a while…”

“What are you talking about?”

I smirked. “Well, Kolbe, when two people love each other very much-“Kolbe blushed and hit me in the stomach. I doubled over, laughing, while Kolbe quickened her pace, her face still flushed. I matched her pace. “Does widdle Kolbe have a kwush?” She turned even redder and muttered something under her breath. “Didn’t catch that.”

“No!” She said forcefully.

“Sure.” I jogged ahead of her to avoid getting hit again. I was smiling to myself when I heard her footsteps right behind me. Kolbe walked in front of me and stopped, grinning wickedly. Oh no.

Kolbe

God, Caleb was an idiot. I mean, what right does he have to know? He was practically skipping in front of me. A slow smile spread across my face. If Caleb wanted a crush, he was going to get one.

I walked in front of him and blocked his way. His smug grin faded as he took in my face. “Well, Caleb… I guess I kind of do have a crush.” His face lit up.

“I knew it! I knew you did!”

“Yea, and I was wondering if you could maybe give me some advice?”

“Advice? Like what?”

“You know, advice. Like kissing and stuff. I mean, you would know all about that because you said you and Abby did some stuff.”

Caleb gaped at me. His mouth opened, then he thought better of it and closed it again. I waited as long as I could, then burst out laughing.

“Your face!” I gasped, tears rolling down my cheeks.

“Wait, so you don’t like him? Not even a little bit?” Caleb looked confused and a little pissed.

“As if!” I gasped, unable to stop laughing. He was so gullible. I saw some movement behind his shoulder. Christopher. I stopped laughing, watching as he walked off down the hall. In his hand was a bracelet I had been wearing earlier. My stomach dropped. I didn’t mean for him to hear that… it was just to get back at Caleb. I dismissed the little part of my brain that wanted to go say sorry. I just met him, and he worked for Zaskar. Not like there would ever be anything there. I turned abruptly and walked off down the hall. Caleb followed me, not noticing what I had. I shrugged off the feeling of guilt and kept walking.
