A year had gone by and Willem and Martha had been able to deal and move on from their loss and their grief. Martha was her usual bubbly self again, much to Willems relief. At one point he had thought that she would never recover.
They also had something to look forward to. A school friend of Willem’s was coming to stay with them for three months. They had been preparing for his visit for the past week.
Martha had gone out and bought new linen and a new duvet set for the spare bedroom. Neither of them had set foot in the nursery for the past year.
Willem wanted to have the nursery cleared out but he was afraid how Martha would react, so he never brought the topic up . Martha in the other hand knew that Willem wanted the room for a man cave, but she could just not bring herself to enter the nursery, and she was glad of Willems discretion.
The day had finally arrived for them to go and fetch Kenny from the bus stop. They both climbed into the truck and drove into town to the bus terminal. They pulled into the terminal and parked the car. The bus pulled into the terminal and they waited outside the car for Kenny to disembark.
Martha could see that Willem was excited to see his friend again. They were best friends since kindergarten. Kenny stepped off the bus and recognised Willem immediately. He grinned broadly and waved to them. He grabbed his small bag and ran to them. Dropping his bag to the ground he and Willem embraced in a strong hug. Then it was Martha who received a bear hug from Kenny. This was the first time she was meeting Kenny. She returned his greeting with just as much affection.
Kenny was much smaller that her husband, he had soft curly black hair that bounced in his small shoulders. He had a tiny round face with the most piercing green eyes. He was a little on the thin side, but Martha had three months to fatten the boy up.
“How was your trip?” asked Willem.
“Actually it was quite pleasant to be honest ,” Kenny replied in his boyish voice. They put Kenny’s bag in the back and were soon on their way back to the farm.
“I can’t believe I am finally going to spend some time with my best bud and his lovely wife. Thanks so much for letting me stay Mrs. Peters.” Kenny said
“My angel please call me Martha, and you are quiet welcome. We are just as pleased you finally agreed to the visit. My darling hubby has been stressing this past week that you were going to cancel.” Martha said as she patted Willems leg.
Willem just smiled and went a lighter shade of pink.
Twenty minutes later they pulled into the gravel road that lead to the farmhouse. Kenny looked around as they pulled up the house.
“Oh my isn’t it gorgeous. I love the deck upstairs.” Kenny said. “Yea Willem just finished the renovations two days ago.” Martha said. The farmhouse was a double story made brick with a thatched roof down the length of the house. The walls were made up from the round big rocks that the Dutch had used when they built their houses. The windows had blue wooden shutters attached to them and they had just recently been repainted so they looked like new. They went in trough the oak front door that had also been redone.
The front portal was decked with a large round carpet that gave the house that welcome feeling the minute you walked in Martha took Kenny hand in hers and led him up the stairs with Willem trailing at the back who was carrying Kenny’s small bag.
“Say Kenny this bag seems rather small for a three month stay,” remarked Willem. Kenny looked sad for a moment and then said “that was all James allowed me to take before he kicked me out of the house.” I figured I would buy more clothes while I am here. That way when I move into my new place I would have some new stuff.” Martha turned to Kenny and squeezed his hand and said, “not a problem my boy, I can pull out the new sewing machine Willem bought for me last year for Christmas and you and I will go into town and go look for some nice material and I will make you some brand new clothes. Better than the ones in the stores.”
