Mid-Hudson Bridge 12 miles said the rusted discarded sign. It looked like it hasn't been touched in years with vines crawling over it.
"That's where we have to go to get to the Adirondacks." Said Cora.
"Are you sure?" I said
"Yeah I'm positive because we need to cross that bridge is near New Paltz because that has an easy way up to Lake George." She said.
"Why are we going up there?" I asked. "Because I said so." She said sounding pretty pissed off. As we walked for about another hour we wound up in a town called Highland. At least that's what I think the sign said it was pretty beaten up.
Something didn't feel right here something felt colder here. As we walked we wound up at a Dunkin Donuts. "Want to stop here and see if we can find anything?" I said. "Sure." She said.
As we walked in we only saw two zombies. They looked harmless enough but something was wrong with them. Their arms were cut off and their legs look like they had gone through a wood chipper. The weirdest thing was though burned into the top of the head was a letter. A marking. An O.
"Cora come check this out." She came back through one of the aisles with a few packets of candy and a can of beans.
"What?" She said. "Theres a marking on these two's heads." I said. As she looked at it her face quickly turned pale. Instead of it looking as if she had seen a ghost it looked like she had become one.
"We have to go now" She said. "Wh..." She didn't give me a chance to object she pulled my hand and dragged me out of there. After we got out of the Dunkin Donuts the doors closed and I swore I had seen something. Something sinister. I didnt give it much attention though.
"What the hell Cora!" I yelled at her. "What was that about?!"
"There's something's here that we shouldn't concern ourselves with. I say we just get out of here as quick as possible."She said more calm than I suspected she would be. She looked very scared though. I didn't pay attention to that though I was so angry I don't even know why.
"Why do we have to leave?" I said. She looked away. "You lived here didn't you?" She stopped looking in my direction all together. She started to cry. It was a muffle of it but it was crying. "I'm sorry Cora but could you please explain to me what's going on?"
"Well," she said wiping her eyes. "This town took a much harder hit than most places did during the outbreak. I would rather not talk about it and get out of here as soon as possible." It started to rain. "Ok we can find shelter in the next town over." I said.
Then I heard the groans those horrible horrible groans. "We need to go now! Said Cora. She started running as fast as possible and,I wasn't far behind. "This way!" Cora yelled running away from the Dunkin Donuts. I started running with her and heard the groans.
The zombies were right behind us. After running about I would say a good mile we found a lake and decided we had lost the zombies. The rain was coming down hard and we had no clue what to do because the only houses were near a bunch of zombies.
"Let's go into these woods." I said "Maybe there's a shack back there or something." Cora nodded her head in agreement. She wasn't telling me something I knew it but we had both turned purple so we went towards the woods. After searching through the woods for about thirty minutes we found a place to rest.
"R.Parker Asylum." I said. Cora looked scared but I want paying attention. Even though this place looked creepy I didn't care we were going to die if we didn't dry off soon.
I broke down the door and helped Cora in we soon went to work searching for clothes or towels.
There were a few groans when we got inside but nothing we couldn't handle. All the hallways were boarded up but the main entrance had a cot a couch and a few towels. There were also a bunch of empty cans and as I can closer to the couch an employee of the asylum. He had put a bullet in his own head it looked like but I saw that O again. I decided not to tell Cora especially since last time a told her she freaked out so I threw the body outside.
"It looks like that guy was trying to hold it out in here." Cora said looking very gloomy and scared not much but just enough I could notice it on her face.
"Yeah but we shouldn't worry about that." I said. "We should worry about what we are going to do."
"I think we should stay here as short as possible." She said
"Well yes but first we have to wait out those zombies and this storm."I said as I took a seat next to her on the couch."
"So wheres the candy?" I asked.
"Right here."She said as she pulled out her bag there were so many twizzlers.
We inhaled the twizzlers. "Well that was healthy."Cora said."haha" we laughed awkwardly together. "Best dinner ever" I said.
"This is fun but we need to figure out where we are going after this." Cora said.
"I thought we were going to Lake George." I said.
"Nooooo." She said "Lake George is too touristy filled with lots of zombies. So I say we go to farther north."
"If we're cold down here though how are we supposed to survive a winter up there?" I asked
"Well a lot of houses up there have pellet stoves so it should be easy to get warm." She answered.
"Ok but..." I said but then I got interrupted by a loud bang noise.
Cora pulled out here gun. I pulled out my knife. "What was that?" I said.
"I don't know." She said.
Soon there were more groans and a zombie came through the door. Cora shot it quickly without even flinching.
"Ok we are a little tightly wound so let's get a little bit of sleep." I said.
"Yeah we should get some sleep. I'll take first watch." She said.
"No I got it you've been through a lot today I got it." I said.
"Thank you." she said quietly. As quickly as she had shot that zombie she feel asleep.
After she feel asleep I decided to look around. I walked through the one hallway with a hole in it's barrier and then turned on my flashlight.
It was worse than I thought it would. There was blood all over the walls and the smell the smell was like nothing ever before. I thought I was going to throw up then I saw it. The thing standing before me hunched over wasn't dead but didn't seem much alive. His mouth and arm was bloody. I think he was eating a zombie. He looked at me with these cold glassy eyes and said would you like a check up. He then pulled out syringe about the length of my arm and started walking towards me.
He didn't run for me he walked. He didn't expect me to run away or thought I couldn't but I ran. I jumped through the hole grabbed Cora who was half asleep when she finally "woke up".
"Whats going on?" She said
"We have to go someone's right behind us and has a big syringe. WE HAVE TO GO NOW OR WE ARE GOING TO DIE!" I said. That woke her up. We ran for the exit but it wasn't there.
Somehow in five minutes I was gone the door had been replaced. Of course it was locked
I ran towards it and tried to break it but as I hit the cold wood I knew I wasn't going to move it.
Then something started filling the room. It was some sort of gas. It smelled like blood but I couldn't see it. I soon felt light headed. Just like I was when I saw Cora for the first time.
This time when I crashed I saw the devil carrying away an angel.
"Time for a check up." said the devil with a cruel smile when he came for me.
