It has become a sort of habit—
For Chip to check the ally beside the Honeycutt's bakery.
What was he expecting?
He never knew.
And neither would the person who left him—
Because he, too;
Would often look towards the sky,
Perhaps wondering:
Whether it was time he
Could be good enough for the moon
That shone beside the stars.
And so, on this day too—
Chip, as he exits the bakery;
Catches his gaze turning towards the ally;
Registering that there is no mere shadow,
Then turning on his heel
To walk towards school.
He receives his friends—
Kim and Jack,
With a usual smile;
That was indeed quite worthy—
Of the sun itself.
He sees Blake,
And nods.
Blake cracks a stiffened smile;
And Chip knows why.
He goes through school,
Not alone at all—
But lonely, indeed.
He knows, as his gaze lands
On someone presenting a flower to Kim;
That the stalk wouldn't last—
At least to him.
He knows, as he averts his gaze;
That deep down,
That was not what he meant.
He hears the bell ring,
Walks down the corridor;
Felt his feet almost stop—
In front of the very door
He had always waited to open.
He then remembers
That there was no longer
Anyone to wait for—
And so he continues on his journey home;
Slightly,
Alone.
And as he arrives at the bakery,
He notices how his gaze
Darts towards the alley.
