"Alex." I said. "I'm so sorry." He looked very very frustrated with me.
"What the hell Izzy?!?!" He said, infuriated that I'd now spilt food on him twice.
His outburst caused a bunch of people to turn and stare at us, including his friends and Dorothy, who sat staring, open mouthed at us.
I quickly turned around and grabbed a bunch of napkins and handed them to him to wipe the pizza sauce off his shirt, avoiding making eye contact with him.
At least his jacket's leather. Maybe it'll come over easy? Oh no, everyone's staring at us. Not again! They better not start calling me something like "Saucy Izzy" or "Pizzy Izzy". I've already had enough from last year being called "Fizzy Izzy".
I grabbed some more napkins for myself and tried to wipe the pizza sauce off my brand new sweatshirt I'd gotten at Warm Topic the other day at the mall. It had a huge skull on it with flower strands looping around it. The skull now looked like it was bloody because of the sauce, and it wasn't coming off very well.
"Alex." I said again. "I'm really really sorry. I didn't see you and I didn't mean to spill my pizza on us."
"You should be sorry!" He retorted. "This is the second time this has happened! I mean, I see why people called you 'Fizzy Izzy' last year now, you're just so clumsy with food!! Granted, I was standing right behind you but still! Gosh!"
My eyes got a little watery and my lower lip started to tremble a little bit.
Oh great, my eyes are tearing up now. Thanks a lot eyes. Gonna make me cry in front of the whole school on the first day, sure, why not?
Alex turned around and started to stalk off, when Conner intervened.
I watched as Conner walked right up to Alex and said to his face: "Go apologize to her right now for the way you just spoke to her. That was not ok."
Oh no Conner! What are you doing?!? Are you trying to get yourself beat up!?
Conner looked over at me and his chocolate colored eyes met mine. He smiled and my heart skipped a beat. I managed to smile back.
I looked back at Alex and my smile fell, because he looked even angrier than before. His gray eyes flared with annoyance and anger and his jaw clenched.
"And why." Alex said, deathly calm. "Would I do anything you tell me to do?" He took a threatening step towards Conner.
Conner's smile dropped but he didn't back down. Now Conner looked angry as well, but instead of throwing a punch or spouting out an angry retort, he simply said: "Just stay away from her." And he started walking towards me.
The whole time this confrontation had been happening, I noticed that a crowd had been gathering around the three of us, watching them argue, while I stood there still covered in a little bit of pizza sauce. I saw Conner walking towards me, Alex staring after him hatefully, and I panicked. I looked back and forth between them with my eyes like crazy for like two seconds and then I ran.
Tears blurred my eyes as I ran through the tan colored halls. I heard two people running after me yelling for me to stop and wait, and I felt the stares of the people in the lunchroom who had been watching the whole ordeal. I ran and ran through a twisting hallway, up the back stairs, and into the girls bathroom in the English hall, where I proceeded to lock myself in a stall, trying not to cry full out.
I heard the bathroom door open and close and I heard Dorothy say softly: "Izzy, are you in here?"
"Yeah." I replied, choked up.
I opened the stall door and there was my best friend. Concern filled her eyes and she held her arms out for a hug. I fell into her and I couldn't stop the tears from flowing. Sobs wracked my body from how crappy of a day I'd had and how mean Alex had been to me.
After a few minutes, I pulled back and wiped my eyes.
"Thanks Dorothy." I sniffled.
"Of course." She replied. "Alex is a real jerk to you. I can't believe him!"
I nodded in response.
Dorothy turned around and she grabbed something off of the sink. It was two lunches. I hadn't even seen her carry them in with her. She handed me one and smiled softly saying: "I thought you still might be hungry."
"Thanks Dorothy." I said.
"Conner ran after you with me. He's waiting outside. I didn't expect him to defend you like that. I think he's as good friend to have around and I like that he stood up for you."
"He's waiting outside?" I squeaked.
"Yep."
Damn I can't believe he cares that much. My only other friend is Dorothy.
My eyes stung with fresh tears of gratefulness that someone besides Dorothy actually cared about me but I held them in. I started to walk out of the bathroom but Dorothy pulled me back.
"You should probably take that sweatshirt off." She said.
"Oh. Right." I laughed a little. It still had pizza sauce stains on it.
Dang, I just realized this is basically a repeat from last year with the soda, except with pizza this time.
I set my lunch tray on the sink and pulled my sweatshirt off and tied it around my waist. I looked in the mirror and my green eyes were a little red from crying but there was nothing I could do about it. So, I grabbed my lunch and walked out to Conner.
