Alice's POV
Finally, my first day came to an end. I was so tired! Thank goodness first year days ended at dinner. Cora and I met up after our introductory to magic class, I thought that was my favourite class. Cora told me that Cynthia had been sleeping all day. While Twilight was flying around all day. Cynthia finally woke up and was now sitting on Cora's shoulder, wagging her tail. Meanwhile, Twilight was flying around our heads as we walked to the dinning hall.
"What did you learn today?" Cora asked, smirking.
"Well, Magic introduction was cool. I can make a snow ball in my hands." I stated, smiling.
"Ohhhh. I can do something cool! Can you make me a piece of ice?" She asked.
"I can try... Let's just wait until after dinner." I said as we walked into the grande dinning hall. We found two empty seats with the other first years. I spotted Alex across the dinning hall and waved. He completely ignored me, I looked down, disappointed.
"What's wrong?" Cora questioned.
"Nothing. Nothing's wrong..." I muttered, snapping out of it.
Cora narrowed her eyes at me, unconvinced but shook it off. Dinner arrived a few minutes later. It was assortment of things on the table, I picked out a few pieces of chicken, some mashed potatoes, carrots and gravy. I got a glass of chocolate milk and grinned.
"I could get used to this...." I said to Cora as I got a bite of mashed potatoes.
"Mhm..." Cora said through a mouth full of fish. I laughed at her, almost dropping my fork. They brought out some food for the first years hatched dragons. Cynthia and Twilight were both sitting on the table, eating side by side out of little silver dishes. I watched carefully as the headmistress approached the small stage at the front of the dinning hall, I thought I was the only one watching, everyone else was so consumed in their food.
The headmistress cleared her throat but no one heard her. She cleared it a little louder, but the chatter that filled the room drowned her out.
"Everyone, quiet please!" She yelled finally giving up on being inconspicuous. I really thought I was the only one that saw any of that. I smirked and turn my attention back to the headmistress.
"I hope all the first years enjoyed their first day here, luckily, it ends now," She smiled tightly at us. "I just wanted to make an announcement to all first years who dragon eggs that have not hatched yet. Please come to the main office after dinner." She managed a real smile of sorts, nodded, and strut of the stage and back to the staff table.
Cora swallowed a mouth full of food. "Well, that was interesting..." She said with a goofy grin.
"What do you think they want to see them for?" I asked her, looking around for the few students still with eggs.
"No idea..." She shrugged as she finished off her milk. "You done?" She asked, nodding to my mostly empty plate.
I nodded and stood up, putting everything on my plate, including the platter from Twilights food. Twilight hopped on my shoulder and Cynthia on Cora's and we headed to the counter. We dropped off our trays and headed out into the hall. I leaned on the wall just outside the door and Cora stood in front of me.
"Whatcha wanna do now? We've got another few hours until we gotta be in our dorm." Cora said, crossing her arms. I shrugged and looked up at the ceiling, thinking for a second.
"I kinda just wanna head back to the dorm and read or something. I have a little homework..." I said, looking back at her. Cora agreed and we navigated back down the main hall.
We stopped when we saw a crying girl run out of the main office and rest on a wall a few feet from us, sinking to the floor. I approached her slowly, crouching down.
"Hey, are you alright?" I inquired, softly. The girl looked up with big brown eyes, tears streaming down her face.
"No... I'm not..." She said, her voice thick with the tears.
"What happened in there?" Cora asked, kneeling down next to us.
"W-well..," She started, hiccuping. "My egg hadn't hatched yet and I was worried, s-so when the headmistress made the announcement, I went right away because I wanted to make sure everything was okay..." She sucked in a breath. "M-my dragon didn't make it.. That's why it didn't hatch... They said this happens every years... But why did it have to happen to me?" The girl shuttered.
Cora and I both looked at her with sympathetic eyes.
"I'm so sorry...." Cora said, patting her shoulder. The girl nodded.
"So what are they going to do? Leave you dragonless?" I asked, sitting cross legged in front of her.
"They said that I can pick again if I want and have another chance, or I can leave..," The girl said softly and looked into my eyes. "What should I do?" She asked seriously.
"You definitely shouldn't leave... Pick a new dragon. Have a fresh start. It wasn't your fault, no matter what." I said, smiling at her. She nodded enthusiastically.
"Yeah. You're right.... It wasn't my fault!" She grinned and stood up. "Thanks so much..." She smiled and helped us both up. For someone so small, she's pretty strong.
"You're so welcome. I'm Alice by the way. And this is Cora..." I said gesturing to the grinning Cora.
"I'm Scarlett..." The girl- Scarlett- smiled at us and nodded. "Hopefully I'll see you guys around..." She waved and walked off, a little bounce in her step now.
"Well that's awful..." I said, petting Twilights head. Cora looked at Cynthia with adoration.
"Yeah..." She says plainly.
"Okay, now let's go..." I said and we walked down the hallway together.
