Chapter 3

Surprise

Morgana POV 

I was talking to Uther in court today. I have been trying to convince him that I need another hand maiden. Gwen is great and I love her. I just well I would like another one. Really I would just like another female friend. Though just asking for that will get me absolutely no where. He would never agree to that. This way is my only way. 

A guard knocked on the door. "Come in." Says Uther looking bothered at being disturbed. The guard comes in and bows before moving to the side. A women in poor clothing is exposed that was behind him. She looks sad but almost familiar looking. I look at her in slight confusion but hide it easily. 

"What do you want?" Uther asks her rudely. Why does he almost act like this? I don't understand him sometimes with how he acts with others. The woman bows down low to the floor. She then looks up at him in desperation which tugs on my heart strings. She looked battered and bruised, something bad must have happened.

"Please King Uther, my village of Ealdor is under attack. Raiders led by the fearsome Kanan, they are invading and stealing our supplies and hurting our people. The winters are harsh and there are many children there. Some of them just won't be strong enough to survive. We barley have enough food as it is and if Kanen takes our harvest, our children won't make it to another summer.  Please we need your help." She practically begs. 

I look to Uther as he seems to be thinking. He is going to help her, right? Her village is just outside of or just inside our borders I think... We have to protect them, right? It is our right to work with and support them. It was at this point that Arthur came barging in with Merlin following behind him. 

Merlin turns to the women surprised. He knows her? They kinda look similar now that I think about it. Merlin seems to get nervous but stays by Arthur as he watches her. I look between them both conflicted. Before he has a chance to do anything Uther replies. "I cannot and I will not help you. Ealdor is just outside of Camelot's boundaries, it would constitute an act of war." He says. I look at him shocked. 

"If you wish for our protection you must move into our borders and we will help you. Otherwise we can not do anything." He says towards her. She seems resigned at his statement. I feel my heart clench at this. She needs our help. We can't do nothing. He dismisses her and she bows before leaving the room as I hear a sob escape her. 

Merlin looks between us and her, us and her. He then looks at us as if disgusted before running after her. Arthur looks after Merlin as if hurt before looking back at Uther. "Why can't we help her? Send a small force just enough to help them. They are between borders it wouldn't start a war." Arthur says looking annoyed that Merlin was upset. 

"It wouldn't hurt to help them Uther...please.." I ask nicely hoping he would listen. "No. It is not our duty. We have to much to do here. My word is final." He says harshly. I sigh. It is obvious that she is important to Merlin. We have to help even if Uther says no. He dismisses us, I look to Arthur and we share a nod before heading off. No words needed.
