Sorry Isn't Enough

You hid your smirk as you walked into the small coffee shop. The smells of roasted coffee beans and freshly made cakes flood your senses. You made your way up to the counter to order the only thing you'd missed about New York. The iced, sweet, caffeinated goodness was all you'd thought about all morning.

You didn't look at Bucky as you waited, using the time to practise the face you needed to use. The one that would make you look like the innocent naive woman you used to be.

"What are you doing here James?" You asked as you slipped into the seat opposite him.

"James? Ouch Sky." He tried to ease the tension.

You took a sip of your drink, holding back a soft moan threatening to escape as the sugar and caffeine hit your taste buds. You'd definitely missed this more than the people.

"Yeah, well that's what happens when you lie to me."

The sharpness of your voice hit Bucky like a tonne of bricks. "Doll please, we didn't mean to."

"Oh you didn't mean to? That makes it all better." You rolled your eyes at him, ignoring the slight flutter in your stomach at the pet name.

"He told us he was going to end it."

"Even if he had. Would you have ever told me?"

Bucky shook his head slightly. "We all knew how much you loved him. We didn't want to hurt you."

You couldn't help letting the mask slip slightly as you snapped at him. "If you cared about me at all you would've told me."

It was something Bucky regretted, more than you realised. Keeping things from you had hurt him. He couldn't tell you that he'd tried countless times only to be shut down by the others. He couldn't tell you that it broke his heart to see Tony treat you in the way that he had.

Instead he kept his mouth shut, offering you the only thing he could. "All I can say is I'm sorry."

"Sorry isn't good enough."

"I know." He sipped on his drink. "But I won't stop trying to make it up to you."

You scoffed, in disbelief that he couldn't understand the level of betrayal you felt at what he'd done. Not a single part of wanted or needed his apology or his false promises.

"I'm not interested. I just want you to leave us alone." You shook your head, standing up to leave.

Bucky stopped you with a soft grip on your wrist. "Please don't, please just stay."

"You've got five minutes and then I have somewhere to be."

Bucky waited for you to sit back down. When you did he let out a breath he didn't realise he was holding.

"So by us I take it you mean Loki?" He didn't bother to hide the jealousy in his voice.

"The one person who has never betrayed me."

"And you trust him? After everything he's done?"

You raised your eyebrow at him. Bucky more than anyone should understand that everyone is capable of change. Not that Loki had changed but they didn't need to know that.

"I love him and he loves me. So yes I trust him."

"You know they want to lock him back up."

Just the idea of Loki back behind bars brought out an anger in you that was more potent than anything you'd experienced before. Stronger than when Tony had broken your heart, stronger than the loss of your home and stronger than the betrayal of your friends.
