Your mind was running in overdrive. It had been nearly a week since Loki had stormed off after you refused to give him the answer he wanted. A week for you try and make sense of what was running around in your head and your heart. You weren't lying when you said you didn't love him but it didn't change the fact that you cared deeply for him. His absence in your life was one you hadn't accounted for, an absence that made you feel empty.

"Fucking hell." You grumbled as the power in your apartment went out.

You'd paid the bill so you knew it was most likely effecting the whole building. The landlord was hardly the most reliable, probably too drunk to even notice.

You pulled your coat from the hook by the door, shrugging into it you grabbed your keys and headed out.

The streets of New York were surprisingly quiet considering it wasn't too late. A small bar a few blocks over became your destination, somewhere you could try and fill the empty feeling if only for a few hours.

As you turned down a quiet street you could see a few drunk men heading towards you. Your hands flickered with magic inside your jacket pocket, ready to put them down if you needed to.

"I'm really not in the mood for this tonight." You mumbled to yourself as they stumbled across the road towards you.

Just as you were about to make your move an arm appeared round your shoulders. You knew the scent of the man next to you before he'd even said a word.

"Let's not kill any drunken idiots tonight Sky." Steve smirked at you.

You tried to shake him off but in true Steve fashion he was having none of it. "I don't need saving Steve." You half growled at him, not impressed with him treating you like a damsel in distress.

"Not saving you. I'm saving them."

Steve glanced over your shoulder to make sure the group of men were still walking away.

"You really think I'd kill them?" You asked, surprised he thought so little of you.

As you reached the end of the road you finally managed to pull away from him.

Steve sighed. "The old you? No. This version of you? I'm not so sure."

You hated how well he knew you, even now without trying he could tell you were holding back. Dealing with Steve's observant nature wasn't what you planned on dealing with tonight, even if it was nice to finally talk to someone. You had to remind yourself what that someone had done and how he'd betrayed you.

"After the week I've had I haven't got time for this."

Steve's whole demeanour changed. "What's wrong?"

Like a dog with a bone.

You knew him too well. You knew if he thought there was a chance you'd open up to him that he wouldn't let it go. You could stand and argue until you were both blue in the face or you could accept he was there to stay.

"If we're doing this I need a drink."

You turned on your heel and headed towards your original destination. The night air began to nip at your skin even through your jacket which you hugged tighter to you. The decision to wear a dress was suddenly becoming the worst one you'd made all day. That included the brooding super soldier walking next to you.

"Do you-"

"Nope." You cut him off knowing what he was about to offer. "I don't need a knight in shining armour or a Prince Charming to save me. I just need a fucking drink."

You noticed him bristle at the curse word which only made you want to do it more. There was something oddly satisfying about getting under his skin. You smirked as you pulled your jacket tighter around you.
