"Mom!" You heard your daughter, Yuri call. Smiling at her, you asked, "Yeah?"
"I found this little photo. Who are they?" She asked.
You frowned slightly and took it from her. She saw how your smile flattened. You swallowed the lump in your throat before looking at her, "Them?"
"I can only recognize... Jungkook uncle, Jimin uncle and Mina aunty. What about this other guy beside you?"

The other guy beside you.

You smiled and looked at her saying, "He's..."
What was he? Were there any words to describe him? You just stared at the picture and said, "It's a photo from my teens... when I was 19."
"19? How many years ago is that?"
"25 years." You said to the 16-year-old who looked astonished. You smiled at her and said, "Where did you find this?"
"In the closet.."

"I must've started growing old now that I forget these things." You said, sighing. She sat beside you as you continued knitting the scarf for her dad.
"Is this for dad?" You hummed, smiling.
"Mom, you didn't tell me his name yet." She said, pointing at the guy beside you in the photo.
"His name? It's... Kim... Taehyung. Yeah.." You said. Your voice was becoming more and more forced as she nodded, looking down.
"Was he a special friend?" You knew your daughter was really smart, just like her dad. Her face resembled her dad's better as well.

"If you say so."
"Tell me more about him, can you?" She asked.
"Why do you want to know?" You asked, smiling a little. She just gulped and said, "I've never seen you smile in any of your pictures the way you're smiling here... with him. I'm just curious who he might be."

You smiled and patted her head saying, "Go finish your homework soon!"
"I've done it already. It's vacation, mom! Dad said we'd go to Seoul! I'm tired of Canada now."
"I really can't... with you all."
"Did he hurt you mom?" She asked. You knew she was going to squeeze out the details from you. Just like her dad, nosy as hell.

"He was the only one who made me feel like I was the happiest person on earth." You said, smiling.
"He's my friend, best friend, family... first boyfriend... and first love." Your statement made her nod, looking down thoughtfully.
"In life... unexpected things happen to us, right? He was an unexpected encounter in my life who just... found his way in." You said. She seemed to think something and asked, "Well... why is he not with you now?"

"He's far away... living happily now." You said. You saw how your daughter's facial expression dropped. She didn't know how to reply.
"But I'm okay now... I've moved on. You are here... see?" You said.
"Was it a sad story?" She asked. You smiled and said, "Not really... it was a magnificent story I could never forget."

Author's POV || 2015. 09. 23

It was the fall of 2015, and people were enjoying themselves everywhere—lively noon in the cafe in the middle of the town. The smell of chai and latte filled your nostrils as you sat down, looking outside.

Heartbroken, numb, empty, you were just there, existing.

An hour passed by as you sat there, looking at the people, trying to focus back on your open documents on the laptop. You stared at them for a minute and looked down. Memories flashed in your mind as you felt a teardrop falling on your lap.

You were at the same cafe again, like every other week. Every time you got the time, you came back here, again... for him. You missed him, his voice, his scent, his everything. But he wasn't there, he was gone, long ago. Yet, his existence lingered around you... in your everyday works, thoughts, words and feelings. You couldn't forget him, how could you, when he was all that you could've ever loved?

Soon, the waitress appeared with a black coffee which he hated. And cubes of sugar in a small bowl beside it kept on the tray. Serving the dish, she disappeared while you just stared down, at the coffee. It was the 3rd coffee you had ordered. You smiled a little, remembering those moments with him spent in the cafe.

You remembered everything... in detail. From the first meeting to the goodbye, you never wanted to talk about it.

"How do you drink this, love? This tastes terrible..." He asked, frowning. You just shot him a glare before saying, "I am trying to drink this. Black coffee is good for your health. Not with 6 cubes of sugar which you like though."
He just pressed his lips together before smiling, admiring you. A frown made its way to your face as you stared at him for a moment. But you couldn't hold that attitude for long, his beautiful ethereal face made you melt. You giggled and hid your face mumbling, "Look away..."
"How can I... when you're this beautiful? It surprises me... how can someone be so beautiful?"

His words were so sincere and warm. They made you feel loved, so loved. You smiled and looked down, not responding. He didn't mind, he knew what you were like. Not the type to flirt, but rather shy and hesitant. He loved it actually because no matter how dry you acted at times, he felt your love for him, he knew it was true.

He pushed the falling strands from your hair behind your ear as you looked at him, flustered.
"How is everything going in your house, love?" He asked. You heaved out a sigh, looking down. He looked at you, with soft affectionate eyes as you spoke, "As always..."
"It'll be okay, trust me." He said, hugging you as you smiled, closing your eyes, and resting your head on his chest. You inhaled his scent, a soft woody smell which you loved. A dark yet soft smell which made you feel safe.

----------

You shook your head, gulping.
"Nothing was okay.." You said, looking down. Your eyes were shedding fresh tears. You wiped them, taking a sip of the coffee. It was bitter, very bitter, just like your heart.
You got up, finishing half of the coffee. Taking your laptop, you paid the bills for the 3 coffees and left the shop. Walking on the lively roads full of people, you noticed how happy they looked. Some were roaming with their loved ones and families.
That would've been us if you never left... if you never abandoned me.

You noticed a movie theatre in that area. It hadn't been constructed 6 years ago when he was there. Maybe if it was there at that time, there would be memories too.

'And nothing can stay the same, it's only growing pains.'

The lyrics of the song played as you held your AirPods, looking down.
He said we'd always stay the same, forever the same. But he was wrong, it was just growing pains...

You kept walking and walking until you reached your home. Opening the door, you went in to see your mom, in the kitchen. She walked toward you, with a faint smile as if she knew everything you were thinking.
"Dear, I've made some... egg poaches. Want to have some?" She asked, in a soft voice. You simply shook your head and said, "I'm not hungry... I just had coffee."
"In that cafe?" She asked. You nodded as she caressed your cheeks, "Dear, it's okay."
You quietly listened to her before saying, "I want to sleep."

She nodded, moving aside. You just entered your room and sat on the bed, keeping your laptop aside. Laying on the bed, you stared at the glow-in-the-dark moons and stars. They were shining in your dark room covered with curtains. You got up after a moment and took out a box under your bed. Opening it, you held the first thing you saw in there, a mirror.
A small smile appeared on your face as you mumbled, "I think the time to fulfil the promise I've made you are coming."
"Maybe... it's time to move on, my love." You said and sighed, keeping the mirror back.
