EDELWEISS:
Courage, DevotionSteve Harrington was an asshole.
Bowie had known this for the majority of his life, but of course, it didn't change a thing. Because he was such a good best friend, the youngest Rogers boy listened to every single one of Steve's problems, and helped work them out. Most of the time it was homework and girls, there was the odd fight, but Bowie didn't mind that at all.
This time, it was girls. More specifically, it was Nancy Wheeler. The second most uptight girl in Hawkins, only bettered by her best friend Barb. For some reason, since they'd made out once, Steve was obsessed. And, because he was an asshole, he asked Bowie what he was supposed to do.
"Come on, Rogers." Steve pushed Bowie as they walked into school, half an hour late, as always. "You know what girls like."
"Why the fuck would I know what girls are like?" The boy groaned, running a hand through his blonde hair.
"'Cos you've helped me with all of the other girls." He shrugged. "And I want this one to go well."
"Put a note in her locker." Bowie suggested, opening his locker and taking out a pack of cigarettes. "Girls love cool and mysterious things."
"Thanks man." Steve patted his friends back in the bro-way that boys always did. "You're the best."
Cheekily, he grinned. "And don't I know it."
"Virgin." The Harrington boy called from down the hall, pointing as his friend, as he raced to the bathroom, just incase Nancy decided to go.
Bowie retaliated. "Man whore!"
"If you were anyone else-"
"I'd be dead." Bowie smiled sarcastically. "You tell me every day."
The news had spread quickly, from family to family. Will Byers had gone missing. Bowie knew because his dad, Kit, was going on the late night searches after his daytime job in the elementary school was over. Cathy was joining him too, for at least the first one, but they wouldn't let Bowie go.
He was too young. They didn't want him involved in such horrific things, so he played to their rules. It wasn't as if the Rogers house had many of them anyway, so this one wasn't completely awful.
So when he was driving to school the next day, he did his very best to forget what he'd been told. Though, it wasn't difficult with his best friend being Steve Harrington. The man was nothing more than an idiot, and he made Bowie laugh.
When he finally got into school, Steve was full of smiles. Of course, Bowie knew why. He'd received a call to the house at a stupid time in the night, with the Harrington boy grinning from the other side of the phone.
Through the line, Bowie was given every excruciating detail of the night Steve had spent with Nancy. He'd snuck, helped her study, with a few other things pushed into the mix.
Most of the time, Bowie just rolled his eyes. Steve was a ridiculous human being sometimes, and would go to great lengths for the things he wanted. Why it had to be Nancy, the boy had no clue.
