"Chishiya! I see you come bearing gifts?" a mad looking, brown haired guy in a multicoloured robe greets him upon our arrival.
"Found her near the river. She's good at clearing games so I thought she might serve a higher purpose here," he explains swiftly, "She also already willingly joined." He chuckles at the latter part.
What an idiot.
"Unlike those other ones..," the man whispers, looking me up and down as if he was trying to scan my potential. "Well, I'm Hatter. Has Chishiya already walked you through the rules? Don't even answer that; Won't hurt to hear them twice. Rule number one: Always wear a bathing suit."
I try to conceal the confusion on my face, deciding not to question him.
The guy named Hatter continues speaking. "Rule number two: You are free to live your life exactly as you wish including alcohol, drugs and sex. There won't be much privacy, though. We superglued all the door's locks."
It's alright, I'll just stay calm.
"You will join our group, clear games and help us collect the playing cards. Once we possess all forty of them, one person will be able to return to the original Tokyo. That person will be whoever is at the top of The Beach's hierarchy at the time. For now that's me. Each resident has a rank, when someone dies everyone moves one up. You might also get promoted to a higher rank if the executive members, the numbers one to nine, perceive you as especially useful. And once we got the first person, meaning me, out of here, we'll just do it all over again! Isn't that great news?"
I stare at him perplexedly and clear my throat. "What's rule number three, then?"
He gives me an eerie grin and replies, "Death to the traitors."
I knew going with that blonde douche was a bad idea. But this? This is a nightmare. Nevertheless, I decide to play along, smiling back at Hatter and nodding. "Understood."He claps his hands in approval. "Welcome to the family then... What's her name again?" He turns to face Chishiya with a look of inquiry.
That one just shakes his head, making it known I hadn't told him either.
"It's Y/N," I therefore respond quickly.
"Ah, what a beautiful name," Hatter compliments me and continues, "Well, I trust Chishiya will supply you with a locker key plus something to wear and guide you to an empty room. I need to get going. Got my women waiting for me." And so he winks at me and leaves through a wooden door on his right. I look after him disgustedly.
"Y/N.. It really is a nice name," I hear Chishiya mutter from across the room.
I roll my eyes at him. "Please stop talking. It's bad enough you forced me to join your little club of lunatics."
He scoffs and replies, "Technically, you joined voluntarily. It's not my fault you limited your options by trying to stab me with a pocketknife."
Starting to grow annoyed, I snap back, "So are you planning on showing me to my room or not?"
—
I won't lie, the room does look quite cozy. I take a few steps around, exploring the space and waiting for Chishiya to show up with clothes and a locker key.
My hair is still dripping from my shower a little, leaving wet spots on the carpet. It feels good to be clean; And not the I take baths in the lake type. The bathroom surprisingly had various equipment, like shower gel, body lotion and even razors.
This must be one of the more luxurious hotels in the actual Tokyo. I could have never afforded a stay here. Not without fraud, that is. My family is still trying to pay off their debts and as a student, I don't exactly have lot of net assets either. If things go to plan and I happen to get out of this shithole some time soon, I might still be able to turn my life around, though.
My train of thought gets interrupted by the sound of the door opening. Chishiya enters and closes it behind him.
"You like your room?"
"You brought my stuff?"
"I did indeed," he says as he throws some black scraps of cloth on the bed, "Put that on."
At further inspection, I identify the odd pieces of fabric as a bikini. "You got to be kidding me. That's practically nothing."
"That's too bad. It's all I could find," he responds in a manner telling me it sure as hell wasn't.
"There's no way I'm wearing that," I reply stubbornly.
He groans. "Don't be such a crybaby."
"Says the guy wearing a sweater. At least get me one of those so I can cover up."
"Alright. Take mine," he offers with a mischievous smile, knowing damn well I won't accept it.
"I would rather walk around naked. Now let me change," I demand.
He turns around, now facing me with his back. These people honestly have never heard of privacy before, have they?
"Leave the room, please?"
"Don't flatter yourself. And hurry up, I don't have all day."
I groan in annoyance but start getting dressed. Once I'm finished, I cross my arms in front of my chest. "You can turn back around. What about my locker key?"
Chishiya fetches it out of his sweater's pocket, holding it up and demonstratively shaking it a little. "It's right here. Let me help you put it on."
"I'm fine thanks," I state quickly.
He shrugs his shoulders. "If you say so. I'll get going, there's something I need to be doing. See you around."
And with that, he takes off. Leaving me to think about today's somewhat disastrous series of events.
