“ATTENTION PLAYERS. Since we are not getting the gist of this game! Your goal is to kill. You don’t have to kill your group members, don’t worry! But everyone else must go. There are five teams left, two singles, the other three have more than one, so be careful! Since you monsters have killed our little doggy, we’ve released another, so just to recap there are for now, three dogs left. Have fun, and remember your goal!”
Sick bas- “HELP!” I turn frantically to see Micheal struggling against the older lady we had seen while getting our suits. I grab for my knife and hold it to her. I obviously couldn’t reach her quickly enough, but if I could make her think this way I may have a chance.
“Give me your food.” She struggles for breath, obviously panicked from the people trying to get her, real and in her mind. “I don't want to do anything rash.” She slurs her words, her hand shaking around Micheal’s throat, constantly rubbing against it. “Give… give it to me, and he wont get hurt.” I drop my knife and grab the bag.
“Look I will give it to you, but please let me sort it for you, some of them are red, those can kill you… you look elderly, I wouldn’t want you to choke” the placating edge courses through my throat.
“Now don’t you start that, I’m only fifty- THATS BESIDES THE POINT! Yes, sort the red, but not for that, I want to watch you eat it.” She takes her knife from Micheal's neck and urges towards the bags. I have to do this quick.
“Ok, let me look, I’m sorry, I’m really nervous under pressure… just don’t hurt my little brother please.” I have to act like I have a deep relationship with him, just have to slowly turn down. Ok quick, I slowly inch towards the bag. See, my dad did teach me one thing, sleight of hands. I switch the stickers quickly on the bag, red good, green bad. “Do… do you want the bag first… or must I eat this now? Please let me hold my brother, I need to say my goodbyes.”
“Throw me the bag. Once I have it I’ll give you the boy… and you, you both have to eat it.” She nudges with her knife towards the red macaroni dish I have. “Give me the bag come on.” This lady is not a problem, but I’m not in the shape to take her, and Micheal obviously isn’t either. Micheal kicks and shoves but the woman smothers him deeper into her stomach. I grab the bag and toss it over to her.
“Now, spare my brother please, we are no threat to you. I’m in horrible condition and he is only a kid- we will eat the meal, just don't let us die like this.” She smirks in satisfaction as I glumly open the meal. She drops the knife on Micheal and returns it to her side. Micheal rushes over to me and climbs onto my legs, unwilling to let go of his grasp. “Ok micheal, you open this I’ll eat it ok?” He looks up at me confused.
“Nononono don’t do it! She's trying to kill you. Please.” I hold onto his hand and I smile, collapsing to the ground and acting as if I was willingly giving into death. I slip the knife I had in my pocket in between my thighs. I graciously open the packaging, the sticker falling off easily. The food was cold, but revenge is delicious.
“Come on Micheal, have a bite.” The lady looked stunned at how pathetic we looked, perfect. She turns the corner, kill her or let the food finish her off? I can't take the risk of her getting the upper hand. I'll let her take the long way out.
“It's ok Micheal.” I bring my finger up to my lips and lean into his ear. “I switched the stickers, silly.” A small giggle escapes him but he holds his mouth closed with his hands. “Come on, lets finish eating, I hid the other bag she only ran off with one.” Micheal scarfs up the rest of the food as I turn towards the dog and grab the left over pack. My blood soaked map was now covered in oil and dirt. Where are we? I lead my finger through the little drawing, like a maze you would do as a child. “Here!” I exclaim, turning towards Micheal, whose face is covered in cheesy goodness. “Come on, we gotta go!” I bend down and grab the pack and Micheal’s hand. Micheal frantically falls forward but finds his place as I’m dragging him along this path I know so little about.
Hours pass by, and the dreadful feeling of tiredness combats the eerie brightness of the lights above that never dim.
“THREE OUT. Five to go” Looks like the old lady got served a plate of karma.
