On the steps of the derelict Hale house, two people sat in a smothering silence, between them, a shovel that had buried the already rotting body of Jude Carter. Any minute now the police would be here to investigate the crime scene and retrieve the orphaned girl. By then, Derek would have to disappear before he was claimed as a fugitive again, but there wasn't an ounce of urgency. He waited patiently beside the blonde girl, waiting for her to tell him to go, until then, he would stay and share the silence with her. She was broken, staring at the mound of dirt where her father lay dead. Her eyes were bloodshot, as red as the blood on her white formal dress. She felt numb. It didn't seem like she had anything left to lose. She was an orphan. She would be homeless. She had lost everything in a single night.
Derek rested a hand on the girl's shoulder. Never did he think he would be sitting beside the girl, trying to comfort her. When the two of them met, he thought the annoying, know-it-all girl who had stumbled into yet another teen werewolf would be the bain of his life, and perhaps on some days, she was, but she had become a vital part of it too. He never thought he would care for this random girl who was related to the woman who had killed his entire family, but here they were.
"You should get going," he warned the girl, his hands covered with the dirt from helping her bury her father. He felt guilt, the guilt of knowing she was bound to live a life like the one he had been living. A miserable one at that. Tarnished by a family neither of them had control over. They were born into this life, and would never get out of it, they could kick and they could claw, but forever they would be stuck in the never-ending hell.
"They did this." her voice said, monotone as she looked straight ahead as a single, angered tear fell from her honey-colored eyes. No emotion in her voice. She had become like a broken doll, a toy beyond repair. "Them. Their kind. The hunters." she said with a scowl, a hatred like the one he felt toward them. "They killed my dad. Their code cost me my parents." Honey turned to the man beside her, her stare dead on him, a single request in mind, a favour that she would never be able to repay him for, but one she was sure would lure him in. "I want revenge, Derek. I want them to pay for what they did."
"Honey, I don't think that-"
"I need your help." she interrupted him before he could try and talk her out of it. "They can't do it again, Derek. They can't keep destroying families and getting away with it. Look what they did to our families. Think what they could have done to others. It needs to end. And it ends with us."
