First Day

There was a deep darkness around you, cradling you gently in a warm and calming embrace. Your mind was fuzzy, and you didn't have a single thought as you drifted in the warm blackness. The silence was peaceful, and any thought that your clouded mind could conjure was quickly dismissed and replaced by a wave of relaxing emptiness.

Slowly, the darkness drifted away, a soft light taking its place. With the light came a noise, a repetitive and irritating noise. You wanted so desperately for the noise to just fade away, for the emptiness and calm to return. Your hand reached out, swatting aimlessly in front of you, searching for the source of the noise. It seemed to be getting louder and louder as it drew you further away from the soft shadows into the morning light.

Your hand hit its target, gripping your phone as you were pulled from your dreamless sleep. You rubbed your eyes and sighed, turning the alarm off with a soft tap of your thumb. You wanted to curl back under the covers, to let that emptiness consume you again, but you couldn't. You had to get ready for work, and you couldn't possibly let yourself be late on the first day.

You dragged yourself out of bed, limbs stretching in all directions, making soft pops as the joints released the gentle tension of sleep. But unfortunately, your mind was still a bit fuzzy from rest, and you felt the habitual morning neediness that stemmed from your caffeine addiction.

You made your way quietly to the kitchen, gathering the ingredients you liked to use to turn the bitter flavor of coffee into something sweet and desirable. You switched on the coffee pot and left the room to get dressed, leaving the machine to brew a pot full of the liquid caffeine.

Rummaging through your closet, you found a pair of jean shorts to wear with your uniform polo. For today you had decided the light blue one would be best. None of the other colors were what you could call ugly, but this color looked best on you, and you wanted to look nice for your first day on the job. You chose a pair of white thigh highs to match the light and playful feel the shirt gave off and some baby blue converse to match.

You entered your bathroom to fix your hair, curling and brushing it a little to give it a wavy appearance. You then brushed down the roots and pulled your hair up into a high ponytail, the gentle curls making your hair look softer and giving it more volume. Next, you pushed down any stray baby hairs, clipping them in place with bobby pins and turning your head in every direction imaginable to adjust and perfect the style. Once satisfied, you snatched a light gloss from your makeup box and exited the bathroom.

It didn't take long for you to put together your coffee in a mug with a lid to carry with you. You clean up your kitchen quickly, putting things in their proper place and wiping off the counter where you had made your coffee. You then went to gather what you would need for the day. You snatched up your phone, a charger, some small snacks, your security badge and Fazwatch, earbuds, and the keys to your car. You dumped your collections into your bag and then made your way out the door, snatching up your coffee on the way out.

The short drive to the Pizza Plex was spent sipping coffee and listening to music from your phone, which was connected to the car's Bluetooth. You were soon pulling into the parking area closest to the employee entrance that Seth had shown you, noting that you had 20 minutes before your shift was officially supposed to start.

That 20 minutes was apparently necessary to find your way to the daycare. You had a sneaking suspicion that you would get lost, and luckily, you didn't get thrown very far off course. In your search for the daycare, you ended up in Monty Golf. Monty Golf wasn't exactly far away from the daycare, so you weren't very far off course, but it still meant that you took a wrong turn. You needed to memorize the way to the daycare a little bit better, or you might end up further away next time.
