Another case involved the kidnapping of a child. Esmeralda dreaded it because she knew the likely chance of the child being rescued alive and it wasn't very likely. The fact that Aimee Lynch, a beautiful little girl who disappeared from a winter festival, had been missing for more than eight hours and the likelihood of finding her was decreasing by the minute slowly destroyed Esmeralda. She kept staring at the last photo taken of Aimee Lynch, seeing the bright smile on her face and Esmeralda could only imagine the horror the little girl might be facing at this moment as the team discuss her case.
A part of her was ready to leave, quit the job, and stay under her covers for the rest of her life. It was cheesy, and cliche. She forgot how much she hated doing cases that involved kids. It only brought out the worst in her because she always ended up getting personal with the victims. She knew that she wasn't supposed to get personal with the victims, but when it was with children she couldn't help it.
In all of the cases that involved children, Esmeralda's mind went to her family. A child would either look like her older sister or a cousin of hers. A random aunt she hasn't seen since she was in elementary school. Her mother when she was a child. Her niece and nephew. Herself as a child. It was almost impossible not to get personal. She didn't want these kids to live with the trauma that she had to face as a child with her older sister.
"Look," Aaron's gruff voice breaks Esmeralda out of her thoughts, "we all think Aimee could be alive. No one's given up on her. That's why there are hundreds of volunteers and officers Combing every inch of the county.
"But they're dragging the rivers and digging up the woods," Emily mentions. "That's not gonna help us if Aimee is still with the unsub. If—"
"She's still alive out there," Esmeralda cut off, her voice monotonous and her face showing signs of exhaustion. "What about Charlie?"
"Yeah, what about Charlie?" Derek chimes in softly. "Is he still alive?"
"Sarah believes it."
"Eight years she's been saying the same thing, JJ."
"Yeah eight years since he disappeared with no evidence to prove that he is alive or dead," Esmeralda adds, slowly growing agitated with Derek.
It was easier these past few days since being back to be annoyed with Derek. Sure she understood that she was gone for two years and a lot can change in two years, but she couldn't understand how Derek could have changed so much since she left. It was almost like he has become too serious, too stern. Even when working on cases, he wouldn't go down each of the members' throats for their opinions that may be proven or not on a case.
Maybe he is like this because he had to take a leadership role after the death of Haley. She found out after the last case when she slept over at Penelope's home. She remembered how in love Aaron was with Haley, even after the divorce was announced to the team. It was the type of love everyone wants to experience even if it doesn't last forever
