There was one thing that Esmeralda was deathly terrified and no, it wasn't tree nuts, as much as she hated nuts in general besides peanuts. She was deathly afraid of falling.

Falling in love.

The last relationship she was in lasted four years, but it was easier for her because she never lived with him or had to work with him. Most of the relationship was between her and her ex working and only seeing each other once or twice a month in person while the rest would be online when they had the time.

It didn't help that her ex was best friends with the man that represented all of America, and she wasn't referring to the president. It wasn't easy dating someone that used to be a Pararescueman in the Air Force and becoming what people liked to say superhero though Esmeralda wouldn't think of him as that. It didn't take her long to fall for him, and she still loved him, but it scared her shitless to repeat the process with another human.

Why she said yes to Aaron was something she didn't understand. Her feelings for him were different, something she wasn't expecting to feel for a widower like him. In retrospect, she understood what it was like losing the love of her life to violence as he did, but for her, it was her father.

Esmeralda found Aaron attractive, that was a fact. She often wondered how good he would look if he had a beard or some sort of facial hair that wasn't his eyebrows. He roamed her mind freely when she wasn't worried about her family or ongoing cases or even Orlin. She was captivated by him in ways that she couldn't explain to herself or anyone else even if she wanted to.

She was terrified, to say the least. She hadn't gone on a date in two years, for obvious reasons, so she had called in the girls to help her pick out an outfit. She didn't want to overdress or underdress for the occasion: her first date. And it wasn't just a typical date, it was a date with her unit chief.

The knock on the door shook her. It felt like a slap back to reality, leaving her heart trembling in her chest.

She kept a gun in the back of her pants, not wanting to risk anything when going out with Aaron. She wanted to protect him from Orlin, but would that mean protecting him from her?

Another knock pulled her out of her trance before she led Bella to her bed near the middle of the living room. The corners of her mouth slowly turned up as she looked through the peephole, her eyes first landing on the colorful flowers in the hands of her date.

Aaron's palms were sweaty, rubbing his palms on the side of his pants while alternating the bouquet from each hand. He didn't think that he would be going on a date so soon, especially after the death of his ex-wife, but he knew that he was ready to take on the chance.

A small step, one would say. A small step to slowly moving on from the past. It was time that he would learn to love life even just a little. And though he had his son still and Jessica's help with raising the young boy, he wanted a small part of life that was what he used to have.
