"And welcome, everyone, to the 19th 1st through 3rd year open house of Craftmine Highschool!"

The crowd exploded as the man on the stage grinned.

Tom shifted his feet.

The boy and his family were attending the yearly Craftmine open house, where the gleaming school stood in front of Tom, possessing an aura of power.

Tommy stood anxiously in the middle of the crowd, fidgeting nervously even though he knew his siblings were beside him.

Tom had heard about the school from tales of his older brothers and sister, but now that he was actually before the academy he felt as if he should've listened better.

Sticking his head out a little bit, he glanced at the other students.

Tall, muscular. Grins, smiles, straight posture, confident eyes. Calculating stances.

Tom felt like he was going to throw up.

Then he saw a kid who looked as bad as Tommy felt.

With black sideburns and white-blonde hair, the kid was tall and lanky, but obviously trying to go unnoticed.

Next to the kid stood another one who was also fidgety but seemingly less nervous, instead seemed like he would rather be somewhere else then at the open house.

Tom sighed after scanning the crowd a few more times and finding people who looked similar enough to him: average, and obviously about to start their first year.

The vice principal rambled on for a few more minutes, awkwardly spilling note cards off the podium at one point, but after a while he finally paused, cleared his throat, and smiled.

"Would last year's top fifteen come to the stage for any important announcements?"

The air in the court garden changed significantly, now seemingly charged as the crowd simultaneously made way for a few special kids who stood out.

They all walked to the podium, confident and poised.

Niki walked by Tom, and brushed him slightly. He sighed in relief.

Now would be the time to do it, thought Tom, and she probably is.

Once Niki announced something, anything about Tommy being a "good friend" of hers, he should be safe for a good while before drama found him.

Hopefully.

Niki walked up onto the stage, and took her place in line, ranked by number.

Half the school's best, all at one place, thought Tom.

They lined up proudly shoulder by shoulder slightly behind the podium, each obviously different from the rest.

Then the number one walked up.

The people of the garden stiffened.

Number one's smile showed no strain, but it was obvious that this could easily become an awkward situation.

Afterall, the title of number one had never been his to begin with.
