You yawned as you sat down in your seat, preparing for another lecture. At least after this you had your favourite class. You could hear the sound of people chatting around you blending together as you yawned again. You could barely get a wink of sleep, your mind too active and racing with too many thoughts to get some rest.

"Oh hey!" a familiar voice piped up from beside you. You turned to your side, glancing at the familiar brunette. Her hair was tied in a braid today, rather than her usual pigtails. She smiled at you as she took her seat, humming under her breath.

"Hi Donna," you greeted lazily. "You seem cheerful."

Her smile only widened, "I guess I do! I got a boyfriend, actually."

"Really?"

"Yeah! I mean, we've been talking for a while but he only made it official like a week ago," she said as she took out her notebook. "I'm still really happy though!"

You strained a smile. You wanted to be happy for her but you couldn't help the ache in your chest. You closed your eyes, exhaling shakily. Don't think about it, don't think about it-- He flashed on the back of your eyelids, engraved into your mind.

"What do you wanna do in the future?" you asked, your voice quiet as you and Diluc sat together watching the sunset at the beach. The sun, radiant and amber, hung low in the sky, painting it a palette of beautiful colours.

"I hope to return to my hometown and take over my father's winery." the red-haired man you called your boyfriend replied. "What about you?"

You leaned back, "I don't want much, just to live a good life. I think that thinking too much on the future or the past takes away the joy of the present."

"Whatever your future holds, I hope I too am in it." a smile graced his lips.

What a joke.

"Y/N? Are you okay? You don't look too well.." Donna's face twisted in concern. You tried to answer, but the professor beginning the lecture quickly signalled the end of that conversation.

You walked back home, the cool November air stinging your skin. It was getting colder, the soothing coolness of the autumn quickly escaping to be replaced by the harsh iciness of winter.

A heavy weight clung in your chest, crawling under your skin and weighing you down. Memories from what feels like forever ago gripped your mind, refusing to let you go. You couldn't stop thinking about him.

Where did it all go wrong?

You thought that the two of you had something special. Were you not enough? What had you done wrong? Why did he fall in love with someone else?
