Mortiz was thankful to leave the house. He left the house at 6 o’clock, the same time as Herr Stiefel woke up, and Mortiz couldn’t take much more of his criticism. It took him fifteen minutes to walk to the town centre; there he met Otto and Georg as he did every morning. They always walk fifteen minutes to Herz-Jesu-Schule, and the time usually went by quickly as they talked, often being taken up by Georg singing praises for Fraulein Grossenbustenhalter, his busty, piano teacher, or both boys bugging their friend about his ‘girlfriend’. A fourteen year-old girl named Melcanne Gabor. However today, Mortiz couldn’t talk to them. He was too hung up on the dreams he had been having, and needed to talk to Melcanne quickly.

Melcanne
I reached Herz-Jesu-Schule in only twenty minutes, and made it into school by 6:45. With Thea by my side, I walked in the gates to see Mortiz being hassled by Otto and Georg. Thea, my only girl friend who goes to school, gasped at the sight of Otto, and rushed over to him, to not-so-subtlety flirt. I do love Thea. When Mortiz saw me, a smile grew over his face of happiness and relief. Why relief?
“MELCIE!” He hugged me so hard I could barely breathe. “Thank goodness your here! I need to talk to you! It has gotten out of hand!”
“What has? Mortiz, I’m confused. What’s gotten out of hand? Is it your father? Oh no! Are you hurt?”
“It’s not him. It’s something darker...” In all the years I’ve known him, and the strange things that have fallen from his lips, I had no idea what he was saying. The only thing I knew was that he was scared. And when he is scared, I am too.
“Mortiz! Just tell me!” That’s when the bell rang. “Listen, we have Latin and Science together today. Tell me then, or up at the oak tonight, okay?” He agreed hastily, and ran off too his first lesson. I stood there confused, what was he talking about? Thea linked my arm, and started talking about Otto as we walked through the main doors.
