"What the fuck is wrong with you, Blake?"
Aurora woke up from her bed hearing the shouting coming from downstairs. She padded down the hall and then halfway down the steps to peer through the banister to find her father and grandfather shouting at each other.
"How do you forget your own damn child at school?" Charles shook his head as he paced the room. "If it wasn't for Vivian going to pick her up after I talked to the school you'd be getting ready for court tomorrow morning and they'd remove her from your custody!"
Blake shook his head. "You're being dramatic."
"She's four. She needs her father now more than ever. What the hell are you doing?" Charles shook his head in disappointment at his son. "Your mother and I raised you better than that."
"Brooklyn left me. Took my money and left me. So excuse me if I need to deal with that!" Blake shouted.
Aurora clutched her stuffed teddy bear closer to her chest. The mention of her mother being gone hurt to hear.
"Yeah that sucks and I'm sorry your marriage is in the toilet but none of that matters when you have a child to raise! Your mother is gonna tear your ass a new one once I tell her about this shit." Charles pinched the bridge of his nose. "I have half the mind to take her with me to Paris because it's clear you don't have her best interests at heart."
That seemed to enrage Blake. He stumbled forward and gripped his father by his collar. "You're not taking my daughter."
Charles shoved his son back. "You're a damn drunk, Blake. That girl needs you and you can't even see that. She lost her mother and that's more important than you losing your wife."
"You're not taking Aurora," Blake muttered.
"You're such a—"
The sound of the steps creaking pulled both men's attention. They saw the girl between the banister bars.
Charles moved to head up the stairs. "Come here, baby girl." Slowly Aurora made her way down. Charles scooped her into his arms. He ran a hand down her head and patted her back. "Let's get some milk and cookies it'll help you sleep."
The two went into the kitchen. Charles propped the girl up on the kitchen island as he grabbed out the cookies and filled a glass of milk.
"Is Daddy gonna be okay?" Aurora softly asked.
Charles placed the pack of cookies and glass of milk beside the small girl. "You don't have to worry about him." He took out a cookie and dipped it in the milk. "Would you want to come and stay with me and Grams for a while?"
