"Ok..... Now!" Emmett yelled as he threw the large boulder a good 20 feet into the air. Jo sucked in a quick breath, pulled back his arm and snapped it forward. The fist sized piece of granite whistled as it raced towards the boulder, cracking as loud as thunder on contact. The smaller rock exploded into shrapnel and dust and the boulder broke into two uneven halves before falling back to the earth with a heavy, wet thud. Emmett howled with laughter, his smile so wide, his face could barely contain it. For the first time in a week, Jo laughed too. Although he wasn't sure if it was because of the boulder or Emmett himself.
It was hard not smiling or laughing around Emmett. They had spent the last several hours alone in the thick forest surrounding the Olympic Coven's home. At first, they simply ran. Ran in circles round and round the large clearing. Dodging trees until they had each worn a small trail to follow. Eventually, the race morphed into a walk in silence. It was neither awkward nor forced. It was plain Emmett knew what Jo needed more than anything was a moment in silence.
Close to what Jo assumed to be midnight, heavy clouds began to blanket the sky, blocking out the little silver light of the moon able to reach the ground.
"It's peaceful." Jo whispered, almost to himself. Breathing in more of the dense air.
"It is." Emmett agreed. He stopped alongside a massive, moss covered tree, looking up into the branches. "Most of the animals left after we moved in. Nights are so quiet."
"I couldn't imagine it ever being too quiet. Not with a houseful like that." Jo said, nodding towards the dim yellow light peeking through the trees.
"You'd be surprised. It can get lonely at times, even in a houseful like that." Emmett said. His voice had a smile around it, but there was a hollow truth just below the surface.
"What do you mean?" Jo asked.
"Nothing." Emmett said, "They just – never mind."
Soft droplets began to fall, pattering on the leaves overhead.
"You know." Jo said, wanting to keep the conversation alive. "I haven't really gotten to test my new super strength yet."
Emmett stood between the two boulder halves, pure joy radiating from his face. "See, I told you so." It was true, Jo was not convinced that he had even a fraction of the strength Emmett was bosting he had.
"As a newborn," he said, "you're stronger than all of us. Well...maybe not ALL of us." He finished with a wink.
Jo laughed. "So, I guess it's not so terrible. I might not have any clue what's going on around me, but at least I'm EXTRA super strong."
"I'm sorry." He said, a sudden awkwardness washing over him. "Do you want me to – uh – explain anything?"
Jo studied the large vampire for a moment. "I actually really would like at least a few things explained."
"I'll try my best."
"What the fuck is a Volturi, and who is Caius?" Jo asked without a second of hesitation.
"Oh wow." Emmett said with an awkward laugh. "Um.... Well, the Volturi is a really old family, though I'm sure Christine would call them a coven, based in Volterra Italy. They're the closest thing the vampire world has to a ruling class, a royal family so to speak." As he spoke, Emmett reached down to pick up the larger half of the boulder. "They are led by a three headed dragon. The ancients. Marcus, the voice of reason." He gouged two fingers deep into the boulder and chunk fell away. "Aro, the mouthpiece." Another chunk fell to the ground. "And Caius, the brutal." The final chunk of the boulder was just barely larger than his fist. He slowly began to squeeze the rock, grinding it to gravel beneath his strong fingers.
