"Can you remember anything from your human life?" Esme asked as they sat on stools at the kitchen island.
"I've been trying." Jo said. "I can get glimpses of some things, but they're so muddy and distorted."
"What do you see?" She asked. Her voice was so warm, and seemed to lack the ringing that most other vampire voices seemed to possess. She was just warm, plain and simple.
"I see a house. It's faded and yellow, with a dark green door and matching shutters. I can see flower lined paths that curve in and around a wide grassy area. I think the house was mine, as a kid. And I think the path is a college campus."
"What about people?" She asked.
"I can't seem to see faces. And it's almost painful to try and make them out. All I can get are general body forms. Nothing else."
"I'm sure they'll come back with time." She said, putting hand on Jo's. "That foul woman's commands can't last forever. You broke them once, I know you can do it again."
"Can I change the subject?" Jo asked. "I'm sorry, I don't want to seem rude. It's just - I feel like I spend most of my time either thinking about her, or talking about her. I know she made me, but I'm realizing I have forever in front of me and I'm ready to move on from just the first few weeks. You know? Maybe one day I'll come back to it. But - it just - it feels too close."
"Of course, sweetheart!" Esme said with a smile. "We can talk about anything you like."
A moment of silence hung in the air. "What do you do on days you aren't babysitting a newborn vampire?" He asked.
"Oh, I'm a bit of a homebody. But, I do have certain chores I need to do to maintain appearances. Grocery shopping for one. We don't keep the food. On days I go, I drive to Seattle or Portland and donate the food to shelters. Otherwise, I spend most of my days here, working on blueprints, or music, or writing. I also keep up with world news as much as I can. Carlisle and I are hoping to take a trip to Europe this winter to visit old friends. I'll likely work on our trip plans. Tracking down certain characters does take time."
"I feel like I should probably take up a hobby or something." Jo joked. "I think I'm going to have a lot of free time to fill."
"As time goes by, control will get easier for you. Soon enough you'll be able to go out into the world yourself. I know being cooped up in here isn't for everyone. You can help the rest of the family bring the human world back to me." Esme said. "Perhaps in a month or so you can even ride along with me as I run my errands."
"I really hope so." Another moment of silence. "It's so quiet out here. How do you keep from being lonely when they're all gone?" He asked.
"When you have forever, a few hours to yourself doesn't seem so bad. I know Carlisle will come back to me. That's enough."
She looked at him.
"You are welcome in this home." She said, "You are welcome as you are. I hope you know that."
"As I am?" Jo asked.
"As you are." She repeated. "I just want you to know you don't have to hide."
"Do you mean-"
"Emmett." She said, "None of us will judge or ridicule you here. We may be old, but you can't live your life as a member of the supernatural without your world views shifting dramatically. Trust me, even as a homebody, I've seen everything."
Jo looked down at his hands. "I know that. It's hard not to feel a little self hating shame. I'm adjusting to everyone being so - aware - of everything. And the world is just so -"
