It wasn't until long after Christine and Anna had disappeared into darkness of the tree line that Jo finally felt safe enough to let go of the frantic energy the was coursing through him. He stood at the edge of the Cullen's porch and could feel the presence of the vampires behind him. With a deep sigh, he finally relaxed.

"Let go of me." Emmett growled. His footsteps were light and slow as the approached. "Jo? Are you ok?"

"Yea." Jo said, not turning around.

"Do you want to come inside?"

"I think I'll stay here a minute, if you don't mind." Jo said. He sat on the step of the porch. He still couldn't seem to pull himself away from the forest line. Emmett quietly sat beside him.

It didn't take long for the hushed conversation in the house to begin.

"What do we do with him?" Rosalie whispered.

"Rose." Esme chided. "He's lost and brand new to this life."

"I'm well aware of that, Esme. But it's not like he's some newborn calf. He's more than capable of taking care of himself."

"The house is already so full." Thomas added.

"Our home is always open to anyone who needs a place to rest." Carlisle retorted. "And if he needs a place to figure out his next step, we can provide that for him."

"Based on what I'm seeing out there, I'm not convinced that next step is going to take him anywhere." Rosalie said.

"There's a lot of emotional change going on." Jasper said. "I can't say for certain where it'll go, but there's a possibility he'll be around for a while."

"I can see that too." Alice added. "There are a couple new paths forming, and I can't quite see exactly where they'll end up."

"I can't simply send away someone in need." Esme said. "I just couldn't bare it. His whole life was ripped away, and then everything he's known for the last few weeks was just uprooted."

"Do we even know if he wants to stay?" Thomas asked. "And if he does, is he willing to follow our life style?"

"We live so differently from Christine and others of our kind. He hasn't hunted yet, but can we risk a blood crazed newborn? We just settled here. I'm not ready to move on because of a stranger." Rosalie said.

"Had it not been for the compulsion he was under; he would have slaughtered that poor family." Edward said.

"But even under the compulsion, he did manage to run away." Esme said. "I think that shows a certain level of self-control."

"We've all been new to this life." Carlisle said. "We've all battled with self-control at some point. We can't send him away just because he's learning to manage his nature."

"We don't even know if he wants to stay." Jasper said. "He might be ready to move on. I know when I left Maria, I was ready to experience the world this life could offer on my own."

"But Jas, you had so many more years under you by that point. He's only a few weeks old." Alice said.

"I'm sure if he wants, he can commit to our lifestyle, just like the rest of you did." Carlisle said. "And if he doesn't, we'll have to consider what we'll do. Perhaps we need to take this one step at a time."

"And what is that first step, Carlisle?" Rosalie asked. "You've already started at the local hospital and our classes start in two days."

"Our first step is to give him a moment to process." Carlisle said. "Allow Emmett to comfort him and give him space to finally breathe."
