“Surprise?” Maddie said, in a hopeful tone. She knew Justin would be shocked, but she didn’t expect him to be mad.

“Surprise alright.” He huffed in reply, moving out of the way as people began to flood into the girl’s house. The two greeted various famous people that were coming in, before following behind them and out into the garden.

“Why are you mad?” Maddie asked, grabbing Justin’s arm and pulling him behind the bar so she could speak to him better over the loud music.

“I.. I’m not mad. It would have been nice to have some warning, that’s all.” He said, in a softer tone. Justin didn’t mind that One Direction were going to be at the party, it’s just.. he was nervous. Not that he would ever let anyone know it, but they intimidated him.

It’s no secret that One Direction and Justin Bieber are always compared. Every interview, every appearance, there’s always a mention of the other. Justin had nothing against the lads, but there was five of them, and only one of him. They were talented; no doubt about that, their fans would die for the; definitely no doubt about that, and there was five of them. And Only. One. Of. Him.

“Don’t worry, you’ll get along fine.” Maddie said, pouring a drink and taking a sip before sliding out from behind the bar, pulling Justin with her so that they weren’t in the way of the barmen.

“You don’t know that.” He said under his breath, so that Maddie didn’t hear.

“Look, I’m gonna go see Nicki, I’ll talk to you later.” She smiled up at Justin and he nodded in response.

Justin grabbed a drink and downed it in one. He winced at the burning sensation piercing the back of his throat, but shrugged it off and walked in the direction of the pool. He smiled,  greeted, and ’bro-hugged’ everyone that he bumped into. The smiled that was plastered on his face was fake, but no one could tell. Justin’s fake smile was perfected by the amount of times he had to do it in interviews.

“Hey, Fredo.” Justin sighed, flopping down next to him, finally being able to wipe the smile from his face.

“Nervous about meeting the 1D boys?” Alfredo guessed, turning to look at Justin.

“You knew they were coming? Why didn’t you tell me?!” He snapped, but the older lad didn’t take it to heart.

He chuckled and shook his head. “Maddie made me swear not to tell. That chick scares me.”

Justin sighed and rested his head in his hands.

“Niall! We’re gonna be late, hurry up!” Zayn called up the stairs, swinging on the bannister while he waited for the blonde boy to appear. Liam and Zayn had come over to Niall’s to pick him up to go to the party, but they were already half an hour late.

Up in his room, Niall was pacing back and forth, running his fingers through his hair and then re-styling it in seconds. He didn’t know what to wear. It was a big thing for him; what he wore, he wanted to make a good impression and the only way he thought he could do that was through what he was wearing. Niall is shy. He’s the baby of the group, and when the boys aren’t with him he is a different person.

“Almost-“ Niall huffed as he pulled on his white pants. “Done!” He checked his reflection one last time, before hurtling down the stairs, almost knocking Liam over.

“Ni, calm down.” Zayn said, grabbing his keys and opening the door to his car. Niall rode shotgun while Liam sat in the back.

“Where’s Harry and Lou?” Niall asked, panicking.

“Meeting us there.” Liam said in a calming tone.

The three boys drove the half-an-hour drive to Maddie’s house, where Louis and Harry were waiting outside. As soon as the three boys got out of the car, they could tell there was tension between the two other boys in their band. They were standing farther apart than usual, and Louis had his arms folded tight across his chest.

“Everything alright?” Niall said, cautiously, as they walked up to them.

Harry barely grunted and Louis just nodded. They turned on their heels and headed towards Maddie’s house, and the three other boys followed in silence.  All five of them walked up to the bar and got a cocktail each, sipping it in silence. It wasn’t like the five of them to be like this; not talking. No matter what had happened they always seemed to lighten the mood and forget about whatever happened, especially at a party.

That’s when it all kicked off. Louis and Harry started shouting at each other, about something stupid. Niall watched as people’s heads turned towards them and he knew it wouldn’t be long before Justin would appear.

Niall sighed and put his empty glass down on the bar and stepped in between the two arguing boys. “Guys, look. This is not the place to-“ He started but Louis stood a step closer to him.

“Stay out of this, Niall.” He hissed, looking down at him.

“I just-“

“Stay. Out.” Louis said again, seeing red with anger. Louis hated fighting with the boys, especially Harry and Niall, but today something was egging him on.

“Louis, please.” Niall begged, tears stinging at the back of his eyes at Louis’ harsh tone.

That’s when the older boy lost it. Before any of the boys knew what was going on, Louis’ fist was coming down hard against Niall’s face. The blonde boy stumbled backwards a little, as he brought his hand up to his bleeding eyebrow.

“Ni, I’m so so-“ Louis started, but Niall stepped back and turned around, ignoring all of the boys pleas for him to come back. Tears ran down the Irish lads cheeks before he could stop them. He ran through the house and out into the garden, turning corner and corner; just trying to escape.

Niall kept his eyes on the ground which he regretted when he bumped into something; someone, tall and broad.

“Woah, watch-“ The voice started, putting his arms out to catch a stumbling Niall. “Are you okay?! Why are you crying?” He said, worrying ringing through his voice as he realised Niall was crying.

Niall looked up and froze. “J-Justin?” He stuttered.
