Am I really ‘that’ unnoticeable to him?
Chapter 2: The Competition
Three days have passed, not once had we touched the paint brush. The professor had insisted we learn the basics first with pencil before working with paint. Tomorrow would be the auspicious day we would make out first artwork using colours. I had also not seen Mr. Nerdy from two days.
I had to buy the necessary paraphernalia from the university store.
“Can I get these things?” I said, handing over the list of items. It would take the shopkeeper a while to accumulate the things, so I explored the store, cherishing the vibrant colours available in the market. As I was gazing at the shades adorning a painting I bumped into a person.
Surprise, surprise!
Mr. Nerdy.
“Oops, sorry,” I said glancing over the books in his hand.
He didn’t even acknowledge me.
“Example paintings, or no example paintings?” he mumbled to himself.
I, being the kind-hearted person I was, intervened and said, “The book with example paintings will be a wise choice. It will give you some basic idea to work on.”
Nodding, he decided to take my advice. Around this time the keeper came back with my things. I rummaged through them realizing he hadn’t given me one book.
“Sir, you seem to have missed this one,” I said pointing towards the book title.
“Sorry, the last copy has been taken by this young man,” he replied pointing towards the book in Mr. Nerdy’s hand. The book I had advised him to buy.
“Well, never mind then,” I said handing over the cash.
Then I turned towards Mr. Nerdy and joked, “If you still want the other book you are free to switch.”
Catching my tease he smiled at me. A wide toothed, 1000 watt, dazzling smile. Then he turned around to walk away. After taking a few steps, he stopped, as if making up his mind.
Then he faced me again and said, “If you ever feel like getting some ideas from this book, feel free to borrow it, I won’t mind.”
This was the first time I had seen him smile, and god, it was beautiful! His smile was so contagious, that I couldn’t help smiling back!
Little had I known that he would not speak to me again for a very long time…

Finally! Today is the day we officially begin our painting. Hard core art starts today.
I bid mum and dad bye and hugged Avery, because I was so excited. As I entered class, I literally squeaked with joy. Our usual desks had been replaced with wooden frame supports, where we would place our drawing book, just like professional artists, you know, the ones who wear their signature lopsided caps.
Enough rambling.
Hmm, we couldn’t change places though; I set my butt down in my spot and saw Mr. Nerdy was there already.
Sir declared our first painting would be a still life. He placed a bowl of fruits on the table and we had to draw it from our point of view. This should be interesting!
I wanted to do my best. I focused all my concentration in forming the best painting ever. I tried to miss no detail. I finished my artwork a little under an hour and after adding final touch-ups, I submitted my paper.
The professor looked down at my painting and gave an approving nod.
Then I glanced at Mr. Nerdy, once again his head was buried in the painting. I noticed his posture. He was a little bend over. One hand was adding energetic strokes to the painting and he ran his other hand through his hair. He kept squinting his eyes, as if finding a fault in his painting so that he could correct it to the last detail.
Aww, how cute.
He stood erect again, and turned his body a little towards me. His shirt was unbuttoned from the top, and I got a sneak peak at his chest. He he. I knew he wouldn’t have defined abs, but his chest looked hard. I had a bizarre urge to touch it.
Restrain your thoughts girl; I scolded myself without taking my eyes off him. In one swift moment he pulled out the paper from the stand and submit it. My eyes snapped of him and my cheeks heated up. I was staring at his chest unashamed. Whoa.
That’s when I realized, I didn’t even know his name.
Next, the professor handed us a paper regarding the history of art.
“I am testing whether everybody did their homework. Time limit is 20 minutes. By that time I will grade your papers. Your time starts now!”
Who knew art included theory as well?
I started answering the questions.
Q1. Who painted ‘The Last Supper’?
I wrote ‘Leonardo Da Vinci’ as the answer. Thank you Dan Brown.
After the series of questions I finally put my pen down and handed in the paper.
Just so I could initiate discussion I asked Mr. Nerdy, “How was the paper?”
He simply shrugged and a sudden jolt of anger passed through me. Was my question not worthy a reply?!
The professor returned in class and announced, “I have graded your papers. This assignment today was a competition. The top three painters will have their names written on the Board of Honour.” He pointed towards a small chalk board in the corner of the room.
“Every week you will have a surprise assignment. The top three names will be re-written every week. This is to initiate fair competition between the students. In third place is Daria Mathews, in second place is Arianna Joel”
“In first place we have a tie between Arizona Ackeroyd and... Alexzander Peaks. Can Alexzander and Arizona come and write their names on the Board of Honour?”
I got up immediately and wrote my name with pride on the board. I turned around to see this Alexzander guy. Uh-hu, standing in front of me was...Mr. Nerdy.
Whoa.
