It's the day before Alice's graduation. Since I can't have no direct contact with the world (Simmons trying to hide us out of society who knows why) I couldn't call her or nothing. I called Simmons though and asked to borrow his helicopter for tomorrow. I told Chris and Sean while they were spray painting Chris's car in the garage. We have just come back from training and we are getting ready to go to a street race tonight; this race is just a drag race in an alley, nothing big.
"Not going." Chris says focusing on the car. He had to go though because I needed an 'adult' to come with me to the ceremony. Sean agreed to come and together, we were trying to convince Chris. "I don't even know Alice."
"Yes you do!" I said following him as he threw something away. "Remember that summer for the lake camp thing...the girl we rescued from drowning?" Alice was 13 at that time and I was 10. She was on this little canoe, rowing on her own and somehow she fell off. Chris and I were on the dock and when we saw a girl struggling to find her way up to the surface, we didn't think twice in jumping in, clothed, to save her. After that day, we became very close. She always had a major crush on Chris who was like 14 or 15 at that time, she eventually got over it...or at least I think so."The one with the glasses and pimples?" Chris turns around at me wondering. I nod. So Alice was not the prettiest back then, but we all have that weird transition to teenage hood...right? "Ohhh, that Alice. I have not seen her since like 4 years ago Rosie, why would I go to her graduation? This random stranger showing up...."
"Chris!" I say irked. "Please...Just come with me. Bring you headphones or something." He looks at me and thinks. It takes me a while to make him, finally, say yes. That night we go drag racing. I bring Chris's very old 1990 Chevy corvette painted in neon blue with black streaks on the sides. We are in a long, dark alley behind an underage club. I bring out the Corvette into position where the smell of burning gasoline reaches me. Some guys come around and drop some old oil around the track so that when the I step on the gas, the car drives off.My opponent is some dark-skin, hispanic, guy who seems very confident in winning this. Ha...he does not know who this is? I place my hand on the control. This 1 minute race will be nothing. We decided to keep it clean with no type of nitrous bottles added or anything. I mean, this corvette has been pimped up with turbo kit...
When I hear "Go", I already find my myself with my foot on the gas. In just 6.0 seconds I reach 98MPH. Impressive but not enough, because one minute in, the dark skin guy is 10 seconds ahead of me. I reach the finish line. I walk out mad but I've lost drag races before. I spot Melvin, talking to Sean. I go to join them before anything happens. But nothing is happening, they are neutral; talking normally.
"Hey Rosie." Melvin smiles. I greet him back. Looks like he and Sean have tied alliances. I feel a tense aroma from them still, like if they are just cool in public, but they still don't like each other. After a while of discussions and all that, something hits me.
Aside from the feuds, fights, weird love-stories, Melvin is someone I highly trust. He knows the streets. He is tough, but most importantly, he knows the value of keeping something a secret. I glance at Sean and I fee like he knows what I'm thinking even if he does not agree.
I think we have found member #4 to this secretive, swift, unplanned mission...
